Spring break flew by so quickly this year, but every happy second leaves us with a happy memory.
If you are here to get some information for the House on the Rock, I may disappoint you, as I would like to use this article to talk more about how this trip helped me to learn more about this country, even though the trip involved people from various parts of the world.
Before I start, I must express appreciation for Michael, who is a resident of this lovely city. He invites international students to his house every Friday for his “Movie Night”, during which we chat a lot and have a lot of fun.
During this Spring Break, we decided to go on a fun adventure to the House on The Rock, which was initially built by Alex Jordan. Although he had an ill temper, he was very talented. He had plenty of designs, but the most impressive one is one of the largest carousels in the world. Being a man of interesting character, he designed the carousel without any horses!
After the visit, we discussed what kind of person Alex Jordan was. He surprised people with unbelievable creativity, he stuck to impractical ideas, and he had a bad temper. While this type of person would probably not find success in my hometown in China, he was able to find great success in the United States.
Michael and I were both surprised by each other’s culture, and I believe culture is the key to being different. I believe that openness to different cultures represents one of the most charming parts of UIUC, which is full of diversity. Residents here feel free to live with the people from all over the world. I am glad that I have been able to encounter totally diverse cultures so that I can have the opportunity to question myself. Many around me are afraid of putting themselves in uncomfortable positions, however, I am more afraid of regretting not making the effort to open myself up to new experiences. I hope that we are all able to see the beauty that cultural differences add to our lives.
