The Honors College Diversity Committee (HCDC) presents to you "Wonder Women 2021: Women Who Lead," a discussion-based event that brings together powerful women with meaningful experiences! The event will take place on March 30th from 5pm-6:30pm.
Each panelist will talk to you about their experiences in hopes of sharing insight on what it means to be Wonder Women in their field of study and journey of life. You'll get a chance to engage with them as well! This will be a safe space to ask any questions and share any comments.

Here's some information about our guests, whom we're excited to welcome to the conversation:
Dr. Aisha El Amin: Aisha El-Amin holds a Ph.D. in Policy Studies of Urban Education from UIC and a Masters of Education from DePaul University. Dr. El-Amin has held several positions at UIC-- as a multi-million dollar education grant manager, director of The Council on Teacher Education, Associate Dean of Student Affairs in the College of Education, and currently Associate Provost and Chief of Staff for the Provost. Before joining the UIC family she served as a Sergeant in the US Army. Dr. El-Amin serves on several not-for-profit boards and is currently building a community center on the south side of Chicago. Her dedication to the community has allowed her to be the recipient of numerous awards and recognitions. Dr. El-Amin is a woman of faith who enjoys spending time with her husband of over 20 years and their 3 teenage daughters.
Dr. Aginah Muhammad: Dr. Aginah M. Muhammad is a UIC Alumna with 20 years of leadership, accountability, and expertise in roles focused on academic and student affairs, teaching and research, human resources, training and development, and financial management. Dr. Muhammad is the Executive Director of the Council on Teacher Education at the University of Illinois of Chicago (UIC). In this role, Dr. Muhammad is responsible for providing campus-wide leadership for over 20 programs leading to professional licensure of educators in the state of Illinois. Prior to this role, Dr. Muhammad served as the Director of the Office of Undergraduate Student Success, Director of the Office of First-Year Initiatives, and Assistant Director of the Office of Undergraduate Research. In addition to Dr. Muhammad’s administrative responsibilities, she serves the community through her involvement in several organizations. Committed to empowering women, specifically, working moms, Dr. Muhammad is the best-selling author of Women Who Persevere: Navigating Motherhood with Power and Grace, I Am My Sister's Keeper, and the creator, host, and executive producer of the weekly podcast, LITE It Up. A Chicago native, Dr. Muhammad grew up in the Englewood community and graduated from Morgan Park High School at the age of 16. Dr. Muhammad began her higher education journey at the University of Illinois at Chicago where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice and a Master’s in Education, Leadership and Administration. Dr. Muhammad earned a Doctorate (with distinction), in Organizational Leadership from The Chicago School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Muhammad resides in South Suburban Chicago with her three teenage children.
Dr. Jennifer Rupert: Jennifer Rupert (PhD University of Illinois at Chicago 2008) is a Senior Lecturer in English and Gender & Women’s Studies at UIC. Jennifer teaches undergraduate courses in first-year writing, literary theory and criticism, the history of feminism, gender and sexuality studies, critical media studies, and modernist literature. She has been awarded the Chancellor’s INSPIRE Award and the Provost’s Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Advising for her commitment to undergraduate education. She is a faculty fellow and a regular instructor in the Honors College Core general education curriculum (From Hip-Hop to Horror: The Sexual and Racial Politics of American Popular Media). Helping Honors students find their own unique and personally meaningful academic paths has been one of her most exciting roles at UIC and gives her great pleasure. She is a recipient of the Silver Circle Award for Teaching Excellence (2018), was named the Honors College Instructor of the Year (2019) and is among the list of winners for the UIC faculty-administered Teaching Recognition Award (2020-2021). Dr. Rupert grew up and went to college in rural Pennsylvania, studied at the University of Vermont for her master’s degree in English, and moved to Chicago in 1998 to pursue her PhD in English Literature with a concentration in Gender & Women’s Studies at UIC. Currently, she lives in a hundred-year old house on the outskirts of the city with her partner, the poet Chris Glomski, and their two cats, Bruno and Kiki. In the summer months, when she isn’t teaching summer college, you can usually find her reading or working in the garden.
Hedy Salgado: Hedy Salgado worked many years in Banking and Corporate Finance specializing in International Lending, Cost Accounting and Financial Planning & Analysis. She decided to make a career change and pursue a lifelong dream of full-time travel by moving overseas and teaching English in South Korea and Japan, where she lived for over 4 years. Hedy found she really enjoyed working in education and, after returning to Chicago, joined UIC as a Business Administrative Associate at the Honors College. She is also a new instructor at the Honors College and co-teaches Current Topics Forum, where she strives to help students find the value in their unique life experiences and where she continues to be awed and amazed by their contributions.
Samantha Taylor: Samantha Taylor is a senior at Illinois Mathematics & Science Academy (IMSA), a public boarding school located in Aurora. At IMSA, she is the president of the Black Student Union and Peer Multicultural Educators. She works as a member of IMSA's equity and excellence team revising campus policies and creating initiatives to make the campus more inclusive. Additionally, Samantha is a student-teacher under an organization called LEAD, where she teaches 9th graders about leadership theories, skills, activism, and current events weekly. Outside of school, Samantha is the CEO of a publication called Blackbox. which is centered on Black culture and the Black experience through art mediums. She is heavily involved in slam poetry and social justice as well.
