The Honors College Diversity Committee is excited to host a virtual panel, “Out in the World: Navigating Queer Identity within UIC and Beyond,” in the continuation of LGBT History Month celebrations! Please join a panel of UIC colleagues and students on Wednesday, November 10th (6pm-7pm) for a lively and meaningful dialogue!
We welcome the following guests:
Dr. Ariel Smith (she/her/hers), PhD, RN, a Postdoctoral Associate in the Department of Population Health Nursing Science, College of Nursing, at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Dr. Smith’s program of research builds on (1) findings from her dissertation which examined bullying, dating violence and suicidality among bisexual adolescents; (2) her current interdisciplinary research which targets cultural, and psychological factors that contribute to and improve mental health disparities of sexual minority adolescents; and (3) her growing interest in game-based learning and digital health research.
Janna Jann (she/her/hers), a sophomore in UIC's Honors College and is pursuing pre-nursing! Currently, she is working with UIC's College of Nursing to research health disparities amongst sexual minorities. Janna is involved with LGBTQ+ and Asian-American activism and likes to draw in her free time.
Liliana Macias (she/her/ella), a DACA/Undocumented Mexican Queer activist and scholar who is working on her PhD in History at the University of Illinois Chicago. She is also the manager of the education initiative the Chicago Learning Collaborative at the Chicago History Museum, which focuses on culturally responsive school programs that support Chicago's youth in the study of their histories. As a scholar, she focuses on the histories of queer Latinx people in Chicago. Particularly, how segregation in the city influenced how, when, and where Latinx queer people create a culture when facing exclusion from Boystown, the LGBTQ+ enclave recognized by the city of Chicago.
Our guests will discuss representation, intersectionality, wellness, and share their wisdom as it relates to the LGBTQIA+ community.
Please see below for the Zoom info. You can login a few minutes before 6pm.
We look forward to an engaging conversation with all of you; we hope you can join us!
