Flames for Change
Student Invite
Dear Student:
On behalf of the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion Committee (EDI) for the UIC Honors College, we cordially invite your department to participate in our bi-annual speaker series, “Flames for Change.” The theme for this installment is Flames for Change: Impacting Society Through Artificial Intelligence. The event is being held on Tuesday, October 8th from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm at the Jane Addams Hull House Dining Hall.
What is Flames for Change?
The Flames for Change Series is meant to harvest, develop, and prepare talented UIC students for a professional life that educates, engages, and encourages the best that they can offer. Each event will have one central theme where panelists from across the university, public/private organizations, community organizers or working professionals are actively using their academic training to serve as ‘change agents’ for the betterment of others.
The purpose of the Flames for Change Series should be to foster change agents in a particular discipline (while employing EDI principles) that could do 2 primary things:
- Combine the ideals and enthusiasm of students with alternative pathways and perspectives in certain disciplines. In other words, bring in working professionals who are lawyers, doctors, health professionals, etc., to speak about innovative and non-traditional ways that students can utilize their academic pursuits to better highlight, interrupt, and resolve systemic issues.
- Take a student’s long-term aspirations and help develop them as members of UIC, but also connect them to a person (or group) that is active and making a difference.
How Can You Be a Part of This?
For the upcoming event, the EDI Committee is inviting you to share your AI project and how you are using your academic training in meaningful acts of service to your respective communities. You will also have the opportunity to participate in a question-and-answer period as a member of the panel.
If you know of someone who is utilizing AI as an act of service, they are certainly welcome to join the discussion as well.
This event is open to the UIC Community. Refreshments and hors d’oeuvres will be provided.
Once you have located a potential panelist from your department, please refer them to Assistant Dean David Boyd at dboyd23@uic.edu or Arya Aitipamula at aaiti2@uic.edu.
Respectfully,
