Please join us as Dr. Eileen Lewalski and Dr. Kyle Gordon discuss crucial topics including drug abuse and misuse, the AWARxE Program, how to handle cases of overdose, and the new over the counter naloxone.  This session will provide us with invaluable information which you may use to prevent or help someone with drug abuse or misuse in the future. Take the pledge to help fight prescription drug abuse!

  • Salam Neighbor - Film Screening

The Student Nurses Association is honored to hold an exclusive film screening of "Salam Neighbor." Salam (Hello) Neighbor is a film and campaign to connect the world to refugees. Through this film, we are immersed into the life of a Syrian refugee through the journey of filmmakers Chris Temple and Zach Ingrasci-- as the first filmmakers allowed to be registered and given a tent inside of a refugee camp.

You can watch a trailer of the film here: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=W6SxPSZVD9o

Our event will take place on Tuesday March 29th at promptly 5 pm in the UIC School of Public Health Auditorium at 1603 W Taylor St, Chicago, IL 60612. It will last anywhere between 2-2.5 hours. Food and refreshments will be provided on a first come, first serve basis. The film screening will be followed by an open mic discussion of the film, where students can share their thoughts and insights on the current refugee crisis plaguing our world. We are excited to announce one very inspiring Syrian speaker who will be shedding light on his own experiences inside Syria, and how we, as humans, as future leaders, can affect positive change in our world.

The event is free and open to the public, but donations will be encouraged at the door and throughout the event. All proceeds will go to Hope for Syria. The Hope for Syria Foundation was specifically formed to alleviate the suffering of, provide hope to, and build a better future for the Syrian people. • Second City Anthropology Conference: Culture in Motion, Sat. 3/5 at UIC

Second City Anthropology ConferenceCulture in Motion: Anthropological Perspectives on Movement, Interaction, and ExchangeMarch 5, 2016, Student Center East

What do we talk about when we talk about culture? There are many ways to define this evermore complex concept: A system of meanings and symbols, an exosomatic means of adaptation, a suite of learned behaviors, a system of institutions -- both material and ideal -- and the relationships that intertwine them. But whatever a culture’s primary features are, they are not in stasis or isolation. Culture is emergent and continually evolving at the intersections of individuals and communities -- where knowledge and practice are created, exchanged, and challenged.

“Innovation is rearrangement of existing forms. There must be differences among the forms which are brought together, and there must also be a way of bringing them together.” - Joseph R. Caldwell.

Attendance and participation in the conference are free and open to all students and other members of the UIC community.

  • Student Day at the Capitol (Lobby Day)

Are you concerned about MAP grants? We are now almost eight months into the state's fiscal year, and still we have no budget from Springfield. As a result, state schools are suffering. Monetary Assistance Program grants the state's largest aid program for low-income students aren't getting paid and many schools can no longer afford to cover for the MAP grant shortfall. Over 100,000 students face uncertainty about their future. Meanwhile, every state school faces difficulty with everything from retaining faculty to rendering student services without direct state funding - for the U of I, that's over $600 million this year alone.

The good news is, you can help. You can become an advocate for the University of Illinois at Chicago and higher education at the annual University Illinois Student Day at the Capitol on March 2, 2016. Meet your legislator and lend your voice to the fight for higher education. If you are interested and haven't registered for Lobby day yet, do so as soon as possible! http://www.cvent.com/events/2016-university-of-illinois-student-day-at-the-capitol-springfield/event-summary-71679b993d8f4306bbd4093faf595132.aspx

    Keynote speaker:

    Teresa Woodruff, PhD

    Director, Women’s Health Research Institute

Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine

Dr. Woodruff is the Thomas J. Watkins Professor of Obstetrics & Gynecology, the Vice Chair of Research (OB/GYN), the Chief of the Division of Reproductive Science in Medicine, Feinberg School of Medicine and Professor of Molecular Biosciences at the Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences at Northwestern University. She is an internationally recognized expert in ovarian biology and, in 2006, coined the term “oncofertility” to describe the merging of two fields: oncology and fertility. She now heads the Oncofertility Consortium, an interdisciplinary team of biomedical and social scientist experts from across the country.  She founded and directs the Oncofertility Saturday Academy (OSA), one of several high school outreach programs that engages girls in basic and medical sciences, and developed the concept for a National Physicians Cooperative in Oncofertility (NPC) in order to link medical practices interested in fertilitypreservation protocols. Dr. Woodruff also serves as the founding director of the Women's Health Research Institute, which has as its mission ‘science to care’ and ensuring that sex and gender are part of the research mission.  Because of her work in inclusion, she was recently interviewed by Leslie Stahl and was highlighted on a 60 Minutes report and has written extensively on inclusion of sex and gender in science and medicine (PNAS, Nature). She was named to the Time Magazine 2013 list of the World’s Most Influential People as the only scientist on the list and was voted 112th. Dr. Woodruff was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Mentoring in an oval office ceremony (2011) and her other awards include the Beacon Award from Frontiers in Reproduction (2013), the Women in Science Award from the Weitzman Institute (2012), and an Alumni Association Merit Award from Northwestern (2012). In addition to her academic stewardship, she also served as the President of the Endocrine Society from 2013-2014. Dr. Woodruff leads a large group of scientists, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, undergraduates, visiting scholars and technicians who together make up the Woodruff Lab.  Members of the lab are making important breakthroughs in follicle biology, oocyte quality and translating this work to patients.

Paid by all undergraduate, graduate, and professional students, the Sustainability Fee is $3 per semester.

The Sustainability Fee funds small, short-term projects, subsidizes larger, long-term projects on campus, and helps to fund student travel to sustainability-related conferences. Projects that pass this stage will be invited to prepare a final proposal for consideration by the board. The Letter of Inquiry form can be found here: http://go.uic.edu/letterofinquiry.
