• National Science Foundation Research Experiences for Undergraduates

  NSF funds a large number of research opportunities for undergraduate students through its REU Sites program. An REU Site consists of a group of ten or so undergraduates who work in the research programs of the host institution. Each student is associated with a specific research project, where he/she works closely with the faculty and other researchers. Students are granted stipends and, in many cases, assistance with housing and travel. Undergraduate students supported with NSF funds must be citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions. An REU Site may be at either a US or foreign location.

  By using the web page, Search for an REU Site, you may examine opportunities in the subject areas supported by various NSF units. Also, you may search by keywords to identify sites in particular research areas or with certain features, such as a particular location.

  Students must contact the individual sites for information and application materials. NSF does not have application materials and does not select student participants. A contact person and contact information is listed for each site.

  Harvard University is one of ten U.S. institutions that again will be offering a ten-week Amgen Scholars Program in the summer of 2016.  The Harvard-Amgen program, with an emphasis on biotechnology research, affords a diverse cohort of rising undergraduate juniors and seniors the opportunity to work in laboratories of faculty across the Harvard universe, including the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering, the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Harvard School of Engineering and Applied Sciences, and the Division of Medical Sciences at Harvard Medical School. In addition to an engaging, formative research experience, Harvard-Amgen Scholars will live among the 400 undergraduates residents of the Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research Village community in one of the historic Houses along the Charles River.

  The Kip Tiernan Social Justice Fellowship honors the lifelong work of the founder of Rosie’s Place, which was established in Boston 41 years ago as the first women’s shelter in the nation.

  The Fellowship is awarded annually to a woman with new ideas, talent and energy to develop and carry out a special project in New England that will improve the lives of poor and homeless women and further the mission of Rosie’s Place.

  Desired projects could include the following:    

  •  A policy initiative or campaign    

  •  A project aimed at reducing poverty and homelessness    

  •  The development and implementation of a project that fills gaps in existing services in areas such as legal advocacy, jobs or economic development housing, shelter and immigration, and in populations such as LGBT, young adults and elders

  The Fellowship is 12 months long and is awarded on a one-time basis to an eligible woman. Fellows are paid a $40,000 stipend.

  Young Invincibles is seeking interested candidates to join our summer fellowship program, YI Scholars, for a professional and educational experience in Washington, DC, Chicago, and Houston. YI Scholars will have the opportunity to learn leadership and professional skills, be trained on the issue areas that Young Invincibles advocates for, explore both the non-profit and business sector and participate in educational activities throughout DC, Chicago, and Houston. Each YI Scholar will get a chance to work across the organization in policy and research, communications, organizing or YIs consulting arm, YI Advisors. In addition, YI Scholars will become a part of a YI Alumni Network to ensure that they continue to engage with other young leaders as they begin their careers. This position is full-time, temporary for 10 weeks (June 6 August 12), and pays a stipend of $5,000. The program also covers the cost of a round-trip plane ticket for the fellow to travel to DC, Chicago, or Houston and back home. Chicago and Houston fellows will be traveling to DC twice during the fellowship to meet with DC staff and the Cognosante foundation and participate in other DC activities.   This internship program will require a commitment of 14-21 hours a week for 3 to 9 months (a 9 month internship is preferred, but a minimum commitment of 4 months is required), starting in late January 2016 or early February 2016.  We are more than happy to accommodate variations on those dates if your students have different requirements.

  Internship opportunities are available in the Office of College and Career Success at Chicago Public Schools.  Specifically, interns would be part of a dynamic team leading a high priority initiative called the Chicago Higher Education Compact.  The Chicago Higher Education Compact is a partnership between CPS, twenty-two universities, and six advisory partners with the goal of increasing college graduation rates for CPS students to 60% by 2025.   The Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of Fellows to study minority rights and produce original research exploring how and why individuals and societies, past and present, have resisted intolerance and protected democratic values.   Applications are now open for the UIC Office of Sustainability Internship Program<http://sustainability.uic.edu/jobs/sustainability-internship-program-2/>.  This undergraduate internship program offers a wide range of opportunities<http://sustainability.uic.edu/jobs/sustainability-internship-program-2/> across numerous fields and departments.  Internship positions include opportunities in research, fieldwork, project planning, project management, and more.  Positions are open to undergraduate students who will be enrolled in undergraduate coursework in the spring term.  Students across all majors are welcome to apply.  Positions are for up to 10hrs/week during the spring term.  Interns are placed in various campus departments where they can make a real impact on their school while gaining real-world experience.

  Besides working on their projects, interns will also enrolled in LAS 493 where they will attend weekly seminars or field outings on a range of educational and skill building topics including energy issues, cultural sustainability issues, institutional challenges and change management, campus structure and administration, campus sustainability, and job readiness. At the end of the semester, students will participate in a final presentation and reception.

  Aim of Internship
  Familiarize students interested in urban sustainability with issues common to manyuniversities, including: recycling/composting, bicycle planning, community engagement,energy conservation & efficiency, and peer-to-peer training programs.

  The intern’s main responsibilities will be to assist with creating a communications programthat effectively communicates the Office’s mission. The intern will also be responsible forthe logistics of events on campus and community engagement via social media, printedmedia, and electronic communications.

  Required Qualifications
  • Interest in, demonstrated experience with, and/or coursework relating to anysustainability issue(s).
  • Excellent communication skills; strong interpersonal communication.
  • Good organizational skills, excellent attention for detail.
  • Ability to work independently, based on instructions from office staff, with minimalsupervision.
  • Experience in utilizing web-based tools including social media (Facebook, Twitter,Instagram) and content-management systems. Experience with WordPress a plus.
  • Familiarity in graphic design, including knowledge in office productivity software (MSOffice, Adobe Creative Suite such as Illustrator) a plus.
  • Ability to work at least 10 hours per week in the Office of Sustainability.
  • Excellent high-fiver.
