Your article is very interesting; it surprised me at your relaxed attitude to grammar and spelling. Surely the two combined lead to understanding and the avoidance of errors. Of course, we all make mistakes; and who doesn't enjoy the pitfalls like differ from, and differ to. I know that I make mistakes and it annoys me when I do. But none of us can be faultless (I just read from the beginning this point, and found that I had omitted to type the second word, without it the sentence was nonsense). I feel that insufficient attention is given to grammar in schools nowadays. I am sure that history could give us many examples where grammar or spelling have led to tragic consequences, it's not just nitpicking (I would hyphenate that word, the spell-checker removed the hyphen, I allowed it, but disagree!) I worked as a writer for an international business magazine, whose readership consisted almost exclusively of persons whose main language was not english. Spelling and 'correct' grammar were needed because that would have been the sort of english they would have learned, I ended up not only as a writer but proofreader as well (sadly, only one salary for the two jobs!)
