  • ARC MP4

The noise is very loud and hurts peoples ears in the Blown out speakers in room MP4 at ARC. The group fitness instructors are hard to hear and the music is annoying coming out of several speakers in the room. It is on the right side of the room as you walk in. I believe in the second row from the square JBL speakers. It has been this way for at least 2 months. They should either disconnect the speaker that isn't working or you would think with all the extra money you receive from group fitness passes, that you could afford to replace the speaker. There have been several people complaining about it and I have personally seen 2 people leave that were nearby complaining it was hurting their ears and the GF instructor is put at a disadvantage because they are not able to adjust it. I would hope that there is a work order in place and in the time being it should be disconnected.

  • Indoor swimming pool

    Hello,

I have a couple of comments about the indoor pool during the school year.

  • Mens locker room etiquette

I go to CRCE everyday in these days. The mens locker room was always clean and quiet until in this afternoon. When I came back to the locker room after workout, there were mess. I found a lot kids in the pool, so I guess that there is a summer camp or some kind of program for kids. There were a lot of grown-ups on the gym too including myself. The locker room is the public place not for "kids only". I don't know who is responsible for that happen but the camp/program manager or their parents should have taught an etiquette to the kids. Or if one of the CRCE staffs noticed that, he/she should have told the person who run the program.

    Thanks.

  • Chinese martial arts?

    Hi there,

I learned that there are some martial arts programs avaiable at ARC but where can I look up the detailed generes?

Especially, I'm looking for some specific generes of Chinese martial arts.

Are there any websites for that?

    Thanks

  • Ryan Owner

Can the court be rented by non-school personnel??

  • Cups availability

Last night a friend of mine and I were at CRCE.  He suddenly felt dizzy and faint.  I went to the counter to ask for a cup so I could get him some water and they said that they do not have any cups.  I can understand not wishing to supply everyone with a drinking cup.  However, in cases such as these there should be an option at the desk.

  • Childcare

Please consider offering childcare, even if it's extremely limited, to members with small children.

  • Sign up sheets for basketball courts

An issue that continues to occur on the CRCE courts when there are an excess of teams wishing to play is that there are disagreements over who is next to play. These disagreements often get heated. As someone who has been on both sides of this situation, it is incredibly frustruating. Especially because a game on average takes about 20-40 minutes. What should happen is that there is a sign up sheet at each court (a clipboard on the wall with a pencil would work fine!!). If something was posted to a wall where a team captain can write his name down and the number of players he has, this problem would NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.

Please take this simple step. It is aggrivating to see how many fights could be avoided if the gym was to put up such a sheet,

If you need additional evidence to recognize the extend of this problem, I would be happy to get a petition signed to show players' desire for such a sign up.

  • ARC Indoor Pool Temperature

The water temperature at ARC indoor pool is and has been below the specified 80 degree F.

  • Pool Hours NOT followed!

Grrr -- Indoor pool closed before stated "closed for meet" hours today!

I went to the pool today for a swim and was turned away because the pool was closed for a meet.  When i got back to my office I checked the Newsletter which had no mention of this, the wellness letter sent out a few days before which also had no mention of this and finally the web page -- which did have it mentioned "closed from 2 to 7 for a varsity meet."  from there i looked to my computer clock which read 1:47.  so, I was probably at the pool no later than 1:30.  Why was the pool closed early?  Please make sure pool staff are better informed about such things and follow them correctly.  As my one time to use my membership that day, i would like compensation.  This wasted time, caused me to miss my short but needed swim, and cost me parking money.

  • What happened to Intramural Broomball

After captaining a team for the past two years, it makes me sad to see this program go away.

  • Unacceptable situation in the weight room

What is going on in the weight rooom is simply unacceptable.  The guys are not removing their weights from the machines, and as a result the next person needs to spend their own time and energy to unlaod someone else's wegiths, and then load them again with their own.  I was there today, and I was met with total contempt when I asked a guy to take his weights down.  He said "I am not doing it, I am leaving."  And he went up the stairs, making himself of course look like a fool, but a proud fool for not doing what I rightfullly asked him to do.

It is simple etiquette to follow gym rules, but besides this, students should understand that this is not a neighborhood gym. It is the University of Illinois and it so happens that some of the people who work out there are professors (like myself), with little time to take care of someone else's messes.   It is also disrespectful toward their fellow students and against true athletic spirit, a spirit that should characterize students of this university.

I was met with the same problems many times since I joined ARC, but today I spoke to the supervisor.  I feel that if definite meausre are not taken, this place will remain a jungle, the way it was today,  repulsive and unfriendly,  truly not a place worth our membership and participation.   Rules should be followed to the letter, and anyone who does not comply should be first warned, then if the person insists on not doing their duty, promply expelled from the gym.  Monitors should be very proactive in telling everyone firmly to pick up their weights AND clean up (this is another thing that is totally neglected- the gym is simply dirty.)

I hope to see some definite changes, but if the monitors are intimidated by the guys who work out their, nothing will ever happen.  This should be directed and channeled by the administration all the way down to the very last person who works there.

  • WiFi at CRCE

Hi, this week the WiFi service in the second level at CrCE has been down. In repeated ocassion I have told the staff and they always tell me that is because there is no wireless service on the second floor. I have used the service many time before (years) and has worked just fine. I can see the IllinoisNET signal but it always tells me it is a connection problem. I teach over at Foelinger and we had a similar issue over there.... it turns out it was the router. Internet service is available in a lot of campus buildings and I think it is an important service here. The staff refuses to fix the issue and they only say that they simply don't offer wireless in the second floor. Please fix.

  • Outdoor Pool temp too hot

Now that the air has cooled, does the outdoor pool need to be quite so hot?  It's difficult to swim hard when you know you must be sweating like crazy from the heat.  A slightly related question:  The outdoor pool is so very warm, why not keep it open when temperatures are below 50 degrees?  It's perfectly comfortable. Californians would think nothing of an outdoor swim even into the 40s. Surely Illini can be just as tough.  Perhaps some informational posting would help everyone realize that it's acceptable, doable, and fun to swim outdoors in cooler weather.

  • Children's Prices

Please reconsider your pricing policy for children.  I went to CRCE the other day and had to bring my two children with me.  I was playing basketball and they were just sitting in the corner watching videos waiting for me.  They were not working out and did not use any part of the facility except for the section of floor they were sitting on.  I do not understand why I have to pay $10/child in these situations for a guest pass.  I recognize there are children's hours, but those are not always convenient hours for faculty/staff with kids.

Would it be possible to change the policy to one where all children under 5 (or some other age) are free at all times?  It's hard for me to imagine a situation where a child that young could use the facility to the point where a $10 charge is justified.  Thanks for your time.

  • accurdate field status over phone and online

The turf soccer fields at 1st & Stadium, the indoor soccer courts at ARC & CRCE are sometimes not available to students due to special events/reservations. This information should be available on the website. What's bad though, is that currently, when I call to check, the staff sometimes don't even have the information or know how to get it.

  • Boxing Speedbag

i was wondering if we could get a new, wall mounted speedbag so that it won't shake. the one we currently have doesnt rebound properly because the top wooden circle doesn't hold firm.

    Cockroach in the pool!

  • Gym Live Streams

This might be a stretch, and more of a long term project, but it would be nice to have live online video streams of the gyms, particularly the basketball courts, that are available to access online. Goign to the courts and then finding out that no one is there or too many people are there is always disheartening ("should we go check the other gym?". Having online streams would be an easy way to check the status of the basketball courts or workout areas, and might promote a better flow of student traffic through the gyms.

  • swimming pool

I would like to strongly suggest in the future to implement a rule regarding thorough showering prior to going into the pool.  Other pools have requirements for showering, swim caps for sanitary reasons.  Reason being, during heavy usage, I have been in the pool where I can literally smell perfume cologne off of people who never showered and jump into the pool, and in the light I can see pools of oil shining on the surface of the water - I am not sure exactly what that is.  Also, there have been times when I swim and strands of hair, once even a bandaid, went through my fingers.

Also multiple times, I have gotten bad bacterial eye infections from the pool.  Granted I am particularly prone to eye infections and this is an occurence that can happen at any pool, I just imagine that with the volume of people in one body of water without showering can elevate those risks.   I have the general feeling the pool is not sanitary and I am very hesitant every time I want to go swimming.  What is the filtration/sanitation procedure for the pool? It might be helpful to know, so I can come to swim after the water is being cleaned, if there is such a schedule.

  • Treadmills at CRCE

I returned to CRCE recently and noticed many of the treadmills had been replaced with ellipticals. The number of treadmills is now so limited that it is difficult to find an available machine. More importantly, the remaining treadmills (with the exception of the 6 just outside the track) are dangerous. The ridged belts are sticky and have caused me to lose my footing numerous times. I had opted to keep running and attempt to "be careful" until yesterday, when I fell face first and was flung backwards off the treadmill. I ended up with numerous scrapes and bruises, so it is safe to say I will no longer be using those treadmills. I know I am not the only one to have had this problem, as I have spoken to several other gym-goers with similar complaints, both about the lack of available treadmills and the hazardous ones that remain. I realize running on the track or using treadmills at ARC are also options for some individuals, but I work near CRCE and only have 30 minutes a day to use the gym, and I prefer to use the treadmill to pace myself as I train for an upcoming race. I would be very grateful if Campus Rec would consider replacing some of the existing ellipticals or dangerous treadmills with treadmills with smooth belts, or at least provide some rationale for the recent changes.

  • Slippery Basketball Court in ARC east wing

The floor of fifth basketball court (starting from the north) in ARC east wing is very slippery. It significantly increases the risk of injury.

Is this court maintained in a different way from the other four? The floor of this particular court is visibly in a different condition.

  • ARC Rowing Machines

Last Thursday, I informed the staff at the ARC that the rowing machines on the top floor of the ARC had been put together incorrectly (the seats are attached to the tracks backwards).

As of last night (Monday), the seats had still to be fixed. I rowed last night anyway with the improperly positioned seat and have a nice big blister on my backside today as a result. It takes 1 screwdriver (flathead) and about 2 minutes to do each one.

Please do this today. It takes nearly 0 manpower/effort/should have never happened in the first place.

  • ARC elipiticals

Hi! I noticed that over the past few weeks(?) many of the elipticals on the 1st floor of ARC has been replaced with newer versions of Precor. While the new Precors are nice, I really miss the "book stands" on the old Precors.

The older version had a ledge on the control pad, which makes it easy to mount books, notes, and even computers to entertain me while on the elipticals. The new version has a sleek design but doesn't leave room for mounting anything other than watching the built-in TV program.

Now I have to fight for the few  Precor EFX 576i up stairs so I can have a stand. Can we please keep some of the Precors that have ledges?

    Thanks!

  • IllinoisNet Wifi at Gym 3

Both IllinoisNet and UiucNet are not working at Gym 3.  Hope they can be fixed as soon as possible.

  • Poor lighting at Gym3

The lighting at gym 3 has been bad for more than a year because of burned out light bulbs.  There are a couple more burned out recently which make the lighting even worse particularly at the badminton courts.  I hope they can be fixed as soon as possible.

  • Any recreation facilities north of Green Street?

I've been looking around for some time for a place to work out north of Green Street. I'm not looking for much, some treadmills, some orbitals, some locker rooms with showers, and even some free weights would be nice too. Are there ANY facilities north of Green Street? Are there any plans to add some?

I work on the north end of campus and working out at CRCE or ARC is a 2 hour process due to travel times.

I remember that Kenney Gym used to have a workout room, but I can't find any information about whether or not it is still open to rec members.

  • Winter Session Hours

During the winter break (both this year and last), the ARC has closed and CRCE has remained open. With fewer students on campus it does make some sense to keep only the smaller facility open. BUT! While CRCE seems to have plenty of treadmills for everyone, the freeweights area at CRCE is EXTREMELY tiny. One power cage, no deadlift platforms, and a very limited set of other freeweight activities. Even with the smaller student population, there's frequently a long weight for some of the equipment. I know it's unlikely/impossible to change things up for this winter, but would campus rec at least consider opening ARC and closing CRCE for winter breaks in the future? Everytime I remember that the ARC will be closed I start looking at other area gyms, even though none of them are as good as the ARC.

  • basketballs

I have disappointed in the amount of basketballs available to check out at ARC. One of the advantages of having a facility like ARC is that it has a number of basketball courts available for use in different activities. Yet, recently there have been no basketballs available despite there being a number of empty courts. Of course, on some occasions, the fault is of those people who check out many basketballs and then meet up to play one game, where these balls are then unnecessary. However, on my most recent visit, this did not appear to be the significant problem. It seems to me that there are simply not enough basketballs to accommodate the number of courts available. Is there any plan to acquire more basketballs for check out?

  • Inline Skating Rink

I am a little upset that the skating rink is closed and I know of several other students that feel the same way. If it is some kind of safety hazard, I'm sure the problem can be fixed without a huge amount of money. I have also heard rumors that it might be demolished to make room for basketball courts. There are plenty of places to play basketball around campus and very few to play hockey. I just want campus rec to keep us hockey players in mind before they decide to make any huge changes.

  • Racquet Rental Fee

I understand that it costs $1 to rent any type of racquet. Last week, my friend rented 2 racquets for racquetball by mistake (we were going to play badminton). He asked a member services staff if he could change it for a badminton racquet right after without any extra charges, but this was to no avail. The "system" would not allow it (the staff was nice though). I suggest charging members $1 for racquet rentals while giving members the privilege to switch types of racquets throughout the day. Else, giving members a grace period to switch racquets in case of mistakes like my friend's would be nice too.

  • ARC/ CRCE Court Reservations

I would like to suggest that the ARC and CRCE allow costumers to reserve sport courts online (i.e. racquetball, volleyball, indoor soccer) to allow us to see when the courts are reserved and make the process more convenient and easy for both you and costumers.

  • New Machines by the Windows at CRCE

I would like to give feedback about the new machines near the windows at CRCE. They run very smoothly, quite in contrast to the old machines, and I enjoy the fan. However, I choose to workout at the windows because I want to see out the windows while I'm working out. I also choose to go there because I don't want to watch TV during my workout. With these new machines, I am being forced to watch either the screen or TV and I'm almost completely prevented from looking out the window. This is very upsetting to me; I come here 4-5 days a week and almost always use the elliptical, but now the quality of my workout will deteriorate. Before, patrons had the option of using ellipticals near the TVs or the windows, but now the choice is gone. I am sincerely requesting the placement of at least one of the older machines without screens near the windows, for those of us (and I can't speak for others, but I'm sure there are more members like me) who don't want to watch television at CRCE.

  • TV Channels on Sunday for Football

You should change a couple of the TV stations in the weight room to the channels where there are football games going on like Fox or CBS. I kindly asked the staff members at ARC and they all said they wouldn't do it. However, somehow one of the channels upstairs were changed and CRCE changes channels if you ask. How come we can't pick what we all want and why is it policy not to put on something many people want to watch. I said a group of people wanted to watch it? Do I have to bring everyone with me next time? I'm so upset to pay so much money for a membership and have the staff tell me I'm only allowed to watch billards and wood chopping contests instead of the Bears game or some other sporting event everyone other person prefers to see.

  • Hazardous Equipment/TVs

This could just be me, but I have a two serious problems that are potential injury hazards as well. First, the seats on almost all of the free weight benches are unstable and wobbly. When you start getting heavy, this can become problematic if you do not have a spotter. Second (and more importantly) is all dip equipment. The way the bars are angled forces users to employ terrible form that puts a very large amount of strain on the shoulders and rotater cuff (dip bars that are parallel to each other lessen this). Those are issues that I have with potentially hazardous equipment that could be addressed. The only other complaint is with respect to the TVs and music in the basement. Most people go to the gym to workout, and not watch TV. However, when there is a TV every few feet, the distractions become intensified. Also, even though I have my music in, Jessica Simpson and Justin Bieber still can be heard in the basement which is kind of frustrating. These are just suggestions and concerns about the facility, and are not meant to be rude at all.
