The career fair is a very important step in securing a job as a student. It is an avenue to connect with potential employers in making a first impression. In the onset of the program, there was one thing that was being discussed continually. Easy guess - the “Career Fair”. There was paranoia all around, but the hardworking folks at Business Career Services helped us settle in. From the initial orientation week to the eve of the career fairs, we had the best resources, including resume reviews, mock interviews, career path advising, amongst others available to us. The best part is that once you are admitted to the MSTM program, you can have advising sessions with your career adviser. As part of the fair preparation, it is important to talk to your assigned adviser as he/she is your best shot at understanding how recruiting happens for graduate students.
A major takeaway from this preparation process is the importance of your resume in the career fair. It should be an honest representation of yourself, as recruiters ask you a barrage of questions regarding its content. How you put your unique story, aka work experience, into a single sheet of paper is a skill that all must master.
We were told to remember these words: networking and elevator pitch. Initially it seemed quite silly but during the event, it came became clear that you have to bring your “A game” when it comes to networking and selling yourself. A tip that helped here is to do a mock pitch in front of your friends or a mirror. This would help in boosting self-confidence. As an international student, knowing the visa system in the US was paramount. We were exposed to resources in researching companies and employees alike. We also had sessions with alumni where we got first-hand experience of what recent graduates encountered. Finally, researching the companies you want to work for and networking with alumni who work there is also essential in connecting with potential employers.
I could go on and on about what happened but I am very grateful to the career services team working day and night to make sure that we were not rattled. No wonder the Business career services is one of the best in the country.
