The thought of writing a blogpost has been hovering my mind for quite some time now, but there didn't seem to be a topic I deemed good enough to write on. Until I realized - it's the last few months at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign - an ocean of opportunities! A place where learning is a continual process, each day a new adventure you don't have enough time to explore.
Little did I know that Champaign had so much to offer and the best of all is the MSTM program. Apart from the program which is a perfect blend of technical and management subjects, the numerous program events and group activities help you grow in every aspect of business and as an individual. “Frontiers in technology” is the highlight of this program for me. A platform where each class has something different to offer - right from business etiquette to seminars by guest speakers on the latest trends in technology, to the innovation challenge projects designed for the convenience and betterment of students and the University. If you like surprises and challenges and like to think out of the box, this is the program for you. And you know what makes this class the best thing ever? “NO Exams!!” :D.
Exposing you to the latest industry trends - no matter what background you have - this course will help you figure out exactly how to grow in your stream and how to practically implement what you learn to get the best results out of it. People Management, Strategy Building, Marketing and Analytics (my favorite!) are some of the many subjects that you will be adept in by the end of this course.
Apart from the curriculum, the department also provides you with the flexibility to join internal student-led consulting firms at UIUC such as EntreCORPS, IBC, OTCR or ICON, who deal with projects from a wide array of organizations, ranging from start-ups on campus to the BIG 4 consulting firms. These platforms help enhance student’s leadership and communication abilities. Being an international student and having worked for 5 years with renowned IT firms, I was highly anticipating this challenging opportunity. The course structure, managing various start-up projects on campus at EntreCORPS, and working part-time on campus have all really shaped me into a better professional.
All in all, if you are confused whether to continue to grow in the technical stream or switch to management (or vice-versa), or want to try out a techno-managerial profile or even dream of setting up a firm of your own - MSTM is the answer! A one year fast-tracked and excellent platform that not only helps you be organized but teaches you excellent time management skills. Trust me, you have no time to procrastinate once you are in MSTM.
