Beginning March 18th, NRES is offering a course in State and Local Sustainability Policy. Due to a recent format change, this course can now be taken by online students who are able to travel to Rantoul, IL during the week of May 19-23rd. The weekly class meetings will occur online 5:00-6:30 pm Tuesdays. The instructor, Andre' Ashmore, is willing to allow graduate students to use this course as the basis of an independent study (through NRES 501). For students interested in a career in a state or local governmental agency, this class is a tremendous opportunity.
The course will introduce students to the public policymaking process with emphasis on how such policies are made at the state and local levels. It also explores the implementation of sustainability policies at the state and local level by giving the student direct exposure to practitioners at these levels of government. This course is an amazing networking opportunity, and it culminates in a week long experience working with the Illinois EPA on issues concerning the redevelopment of the former Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL (May 19-23).
Andre' Ashmore brings tremendous experience to the class. He is currently Senior Advisor to the Director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity and, also, the Village President of Matteson, IL. He has previously served in several state roles as Deputy Secretary of Transportation, Director of Local Government Affairs for the Office of the Governor, and Director of Regional Outreach for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
