October 19 – Reading Scientific Literature
Mastering the language of science and reading scientific literature will be critical skills for professional success. These skills take practice. This session will help you refine your skills for conducting literature searches and selecting appropriate materials. You will also learn strategies to enhance your comprehension of scientific readings and improve the way you summarize peer-reviewed literature. We recommend this session for all students preparing their capstone proposals or writing their capstone papers.
November 2 – Capstone Readiness (including new self-help materials)
All students after having earned at least 16 hours of academic credit should begin the capstone preparation process. But where do you start? What questions do you ask? How do you select a topic? How do you approach a faculty member to serve on your Committee? What expectations should you have? What expectations will the faculty have of you? All of these questions, and many more, will be answered during this presentation.
November 16 – Spring/Summer 2016 Course Selection
Not quite sure what courses to take in Spring and Summer 2016? This webinar will review program requirements, explain Core Course options, and describe upcoming courses in more depth than the information provided in the Course Catalog.
November 30 – Writing Goals and Objectives
Students developing a capstone proposal should be especially interested in this webinar. Whether you are defining goals related to a research project or developing your internship proposal (GIAF), this session will give you a better understanding of the differences between goals and objectives and hands-on practice writing them. Making your goals and objectives clear and succinct will help your evaluation Committee assess your capstone accomplishments. Join this session to learn the proper way to build “SMARTer” objectives.
We hope you will take advantage of these presentations designed for online NRES Graduate Students in support of their program efforts. For further information, please contact Renée Gracon at gracon1@illinois.edu.
