Title: Monitoring of Yeast Species in the Environment of Dolphins in Human Care
Presenter: Miranda O’Dell
Date: March 27, 10:00 am
Location: N-527, Turner Hall
Halotolerant and halophilic yeasts can survive in waters in which dolphins live. Considerable amounts of time and effort are provided to care for and train these dolphins, and disease prevention is of the utmost importance. Respiratory lesions and abscesses with Candida spp., especially Candida glabrata, and other yeasts have been recovered by the U of IL Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. This study was aimed at identifying yeasts, including C. glabrata, which may be found within the marine environment of the dolphin habitats from several aquaria in the United States to determine the potential for forming a biofilm within the environment and chronically re-colonizing these dolphins.
