You are invited to attend the capstone presentation by Carolyn Kroll,
An Analysis of USEPA Brownfield Redevelopment and Incidents of Reported Crime in Chicago-An Internship with the Illinois State Geological Survey,
on Tuesday, June 26th at 11:00 am.
Carolyn completed an internship with the ISGS that involved creating a GIS coverage map of USEPA brownfield sites in Chicago and analyzing the relationships between the land use of redeveloped brownfields and the reported nearby crime incidents. Five categories of land use were used in the analysis: community centers, commercial, parks, residential, and schools. Results showed there was a higher number of crime incidents before brownfield redevelopment than after redevelopment. The sites which were redeveloped into parks experienced the largest reduction of crimes, while the sites which were redeveloped into community centers experienced the least reduction of crime.
