If you are a University of Illinois undergraduate and interested in Japanese culture, the Japan House Internship might be the perfect opportunity for you. Our interns often say that their internship changed their college years dramatically. Many have made strong friendships with other interns and have gone on to travel Japan and explore other Asian cultures!
Interns will be introduced to Chado, or the Way of Tea, and learn to wear yukata, whisk and serve matcha green tea, as well as learning the history and significance of Japan House at the University of Illinois for guests and visitors. Interns will receive 3 hours of academic credit for ARTD 299 Special Topics in Design: Japan House Internship (must be able to meet Tuesdays and Thursdays 2-4pm). Responsibilities will include approximately 10 hours per week giving public tours of Japan House, developing and implementing public experience programs, updating and maintaining inventory of Japan House collections including kimono, scrolls and other Japanese objects, assisting in efforts through social media (including blogging, photography and electronic communications), general assistance in organization of Japan House facilities, hand-crafting items for sale at our annual fundraiser Bazaar, development of programming specifically targeting students, and assisting in coordination, set-up and participation of Matsuri, our Japanese festival on Sunday, September 9, 2018. There is an opportunity for select interns to continue working at Japan House in Spring 2019 as a paid position.
