  Are you a passionate environmentalist? Do you want to devote your career to addressing environmental concerns? The University of Illinois seeks to nominate sophomores and juniors for the prestigious Udall Scholarship. The Udall awards $7,000 to sophomores or juniors who are taking action to address environmental concerns and are committed to a career related to the environment. *Please note that there are special awards also for Native American students interested in tribal policy or health care (no need to be related to the environment).*

  Students must be US citizens, US nationals, or US permanent residents. A successful applicant will have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and demonstrate leadership and a commitment to service. The University of Illinois may nominate up to six students for the Udall Scholarship. The campus deadline is February 6, 2020 to be considered.   Joanne Manaster is a senior faculty instructor for the UI School of Integrative Biology. She is active in new media with a healthy social media following. Her @sciencegoddess twitter account has been named by Mashable as "One of 25 Twitter Accounts that Will Make You Smarter". There, she shares interesting science as well as some of the latest popular science books. She is a former blogger with Scientific American and is a cohost of a regular streaming show called "Read Science!" where she interviews science authors about how they communicate science to the general public. We are in a golden age for popular science books where excellent authors, scientists, and non-scientists alike, share the world of science in ways that can enchant as well as inform. Joanne Manaster presents an overview of the large variety of popular science books available at your favorite library or bookstore.   If you are a high-achieving junior and plan to attend graduate school after graduation in the arts, humanities or social sciences, but have concerns about being able to afford it, consider applying for the Beinecke Scholarship.  The Beinecke Foundation is looking for students who have demonstrated superior standards of intellectual ability, scholastic achievement, and personal promise during their undergraduate years. The program seeks to encourage and enable highly motivated U.S. citizen juniors to pursue graduate studies in the arts, humanities, and social sciences. Each scholar receives $4,000 immediately prior to entering graduate school and an additional $30,000 while attending graduate school. Preference is given to candidates for whom the awarding of significant financial aid would increase the likelihood of the student's being able to attend graduate school.

  The University of Illinois is one of a select few institutions that may endorse a candidate for the Beinecke Scholarship, and the National and International Scholarships Program has planned two sessions to assist students interested in earning this $34,000 award.   The University of Illinois is hosting informational sessions on National Security Education Program Boren undergraduate study abroad scholarships. The Boren provides study abroad scholarships of $6,000-$20,000 for a full academic year or $4,000-$10,000 for a semester. All scholarships may be used for U.S. citizens to study in Asia, Africa, Central & Eastern Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East on almost any study abroad program. (Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.) These are merit-based scholarships, and approximately 1 in 5 eligible applicants receive awards.  Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) students also have the option of applying for summer-only programs of eight weeks or more.

  To receive the scholarship, award winners must enter into a service agreement requiring that they attempt to work in a paid position for the federal government in an area related to national security, generally the Departments of State, Defense, Homeland Security, or the Intelligence Community within three years of graduation (deferrals possible/encouraged for graduate study). Working for USAID or tenure in the Peace Corps counts in the service requirement. Winners also receive priority-hiring status. The campus application deadline is January 16, 2020 for any semester or year of study between May 2020 and May 2021.

  The LGBT Resource Center and Spurlock Museum present a film series in tribute to those who fought for justice in the LGBTQ+ community in the United States. The subjects of these films are often not recognized in relation to the events at Stonewall in June 1969, especially the political-raising events that took place prior to Stonewall. The films follow a chronological arc, and each will be followed by a discussion.

  Gregg Mitman will speak at the Environmental Humanities Film Screening and Discussion of The Land Beneath Our Feet on October 24, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in Room 208 (Second Floor), Levis Faculty Center (919 W. Illinois Street, Urbana).

  The Land Beneath Our Feet follows a young Liberian man, uprooted by war, who returns from the USA with never-before-seen footage of Liberia’s past. The uncovered footage is embraced as a national treasure. Depicting a 1926 corporate land grab, it is also an explosive reminder of eroding land rights. In post-conflict Liberia, individuals and communities are pitted against multinational corporations, the government, and each other in life-threatening disputes over land. What can this ghostly footage offer a nation, as it debates radical land reforms that could empower communities to shape a more diverse, stable and sustainable future?

  Dr. Mitman is Vilas Research and William Coleman Professor of History, Medical History, and Environmental Studies at the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

  This talk by Arboretum Director Kevin McSweeney covers a brief history of the development of the Arboretum, as well as and its current activities. Emerging aspirations towards a more student-engaged and campus/community-centered Arboretum will also be discussed. Dr. McSweeney is a soil scientist and PhD graduate of UIUC. He spent 30 years at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on the faculty and in several administrative roles, including Director of the Arboretum. His research and teaching interests are in soil and earth history and repurposing degraded land.

  “Framing the Global Immigrant Challenge: Evidence from Tweets Sent by Elected Representatives” is a MillerComm2020 Lecture Series Event featuring David D.   Professor Laitin’s presentation applies text analysis and machine learning tools to an analysis of social media, to determine where migration issues are most salient, whether the messages focus on economic challenges or legal rights, and whether sentiments change with significant events, such as terrorist attacks or mass deaths of drowned asylum seekers. Morrison invited renowned artists whose work also deals with the experience of cultural and social displacement to join her in a public conversation that she had been pursuing for years through her own research and writing and in her teaching at Princeton University. The film expands that conversation, combining exclusive and unreleased footage of the Nobel Laureate in dialogue with artists -- first, in Paris in 2006 and then, in 2015, at her home in New York state -- with extensive archival film footage, music, and still images to present a series of candid and incisive exchanges about race, identity, “foreignness,” and art’s redemptive power.   Eboo is a CHP alumnus and author, and the event will be a discussion of his book Acts of Faith. This book is mostly about his time at the U of I, his life in Allen Hall, and his developing sense of his own identity during that time. His work has led to the creation of the UI chapter of Interfaith in Action, part of the Interfaith Youth Core, the national organization that he established. [This program is being offered in conjunction with events sponsored by the Campus/Community Interfaith Oversight Committee.] Former Rhodes Scholar, and Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core. Dr. Patel was a member of President Barack Obama's inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based Neighborhood Partnerships and was named by U.S. News and World Reports as one of America’s Best Leaders in 2009. He is the author of four books, including Acts of Faith.

  Are you concerned about issues facing your community, campus or country, and are you actively working to make change?  The prestigious Harry S. Truman Scholarship program is looking for the academically strong student who has a passion for public service.

  Evaluators look for leadership ability, potential for influencing public policies, community service and extracurricular involvement, strong academic performance, and potential to perform well in a graduate school program. It awards $30,000 merit-based scholarships to U.S. citizen college students who wish to attend graduate school in preparation for careers in public service.  Public service includes a wide array of career possibilities, such as public health; local, state, or federal government; educational policy; international relations; conservation; and environmental protection. Candidates should be able to demonstrate leadership experiences in campus and community service activities.

  Truman Scholars have pursued many fields of study, such as agriculture, engineering, economics, education, government, history, international relations, law, political science, public administration, and public health. Scholars are required to work in public service for three of the seven years following completion of a Foundation funded graduate degree program as a condition of receiving funding.
