The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced its Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) for summer 2018. SURF students will have the opportunity to work one-on-one with NIST scientists and engineers. The major goal of the NIST SURF program is to provide opportunities for the United States' next generation of scientists and engineers, especially in ground-breaking areas of emerging technologies.
The SURF program is open to all undergraduate students in STEM fields with a gradepoint average of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale) or higher. Graduating seniors are eligible to apply if they are a full-time, registered student at the time of the application (February 2018). Students must be U.S. citizens or permanent legal residents (verification will be required). This SURF comes with a $5,500 stipend.
The NIST SURF takes place at two locations: University of Colorado, Boulder, and University of Maryland, Gaithersburg. Each location has several facilities and students are encouraged to visit https://www.nist.gov/surf to find out more about the research programs at each location, and the SURF program more generally. Students may apply to both Boulder and Gaithersburg (instructions on how to do so are on the application.)
Note: The University of Illinois campus deadline is several weeks in advance of the February 12, 2018 NIST SURF deadline. Complete applications (including any letters of recommendation) are due by 5:00pm on Monday, January 29, 2018, to: https://forms.illinois.edu/sec/1079058 - Students who plan to apply must ALSO indicate an “intent to apply” NO LATER than 5:00 p.m. Friday, January 12, 2018, by emailing the Office of Undergraduate Research at ugresearch@illinois.edu; subject line should read: NIST SURF Intent to Apply.
