Program Description
Illinois Undergraduate Research Ambassadors (IURA) are a collaborative cohort of accomplished and experienced students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Ambassadors will promote undergraduate research on the UIUC campus and help the Office of Undergraduate Research (OUR) develop and maintain student-focused programs that represent UIUC’s diverse array of disciplines.
Essential Skills and Experiences
Ideal candidates should demonstrate at least 2 semesters (or 1 full summer semester) of engagement in research/creative inquiry and exhibit excellent communication skills. Such candidates should be reliable, organized, personable, and respectful. Experience with peer mentorship or advising is preferred but not required.
Responsibilities
Ambassadors must be active participants in all assigned responsibilities, including occasional mandatory weekend and evening events, for the full academic terms of Fall 2019 and Spring 2020.
- Represent and promote the mission OUR to current and perspective students. This includes on-campus recruiting (e.g. admitted student day, quad day) and other informational events at the discretion of OUR staff.
- Mentor, support, and guide undergraduate students along different stages of the research journey.
- Assist with the organization and logistics of the Undergraduate Research Symposium.
- Actively engage in opportunities for professional development provided by OUR.
- Serve as student advisory board and provide critical feedback about OUR programs and initiatives.
- Attend monthly evening meetings (usually a Tuesday from 5 – 7pm); absences must be pre-discussed.
Ambassador Committees:
At the beginning of the academic year, ambassadors will sign-up for one of three committees. This team will work together to accomplish the goals tasked to each committee listed below:

Committee 3: New Program Development and Implementation

1. Schedule, organize, and deploy 10 brief outreach presentations (<30 minutes each) to a course, department, or student-run organization on campus.

1. Schedule, organize, and run OUR’s main workshop offerings (GSIRW and VURW), and plan PWRW with Writers Workshop

1. Plan, develop, and implement one new sustainable program.

2. Represent OUR at the 13 admitted student days.

2. Develop and pilot one new workshop in consultation with OUR staff.

2. Organize two meetings with student affairs units to create one comprehensive report that compares OUR program offerings to peer institutions
