URBANA, Illinois – Detectives with the multijurisdictional Street Crimes Task Force this week arrested a man who was wanted for his alleged involvement in a prior shooting and found to be illegally in possession of a handgun on Tuesday.
Martines A. Gill, 36, of Urbana, was arrested at 3 p.m. Tuesday near Coler and Western avenues, Urbana, for unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, possession of a controlled substance, armed violence and on a Champaign County warrant for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Police had been seeking Gill after the arrest warrant was issued last month following an investigation into his involvement in a shooting last year in Champaign. While they were looking for him on Tuesday afternoon, the detectives recognized him walking on the sidewalk.
Upon making the arrest related to the warrant, detectives found a handgun in his jacket pocket and two bags of cocaine that had been discarded on the sidewalk immediately next to where he was standing.
Detectives employed by the Champaign Police Department, Urbana Police Department, Champaign County Sheriff’s Office and University of Illinois Police Department were all involved in Tuesday’s arrest. The agencies contribute to the Street Crimes Task Force, which is a collaborative effort to address issues of violence in Champaign-Urbana related to narcotics and gun crimes.
