CHAMPAIGN – A man was arrested and a loaded handgun recovered over the weekend during an early morning traffic stop just off the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus.
At 3:52 a.m. Saturday, a U. of I. Police officer stopped a vehicle, the driver of which had just blown a stop sign at Third and White streets, Champaign.
While speaking to the driver, the officer noticed a plastic bag containing marijuana on the floor between a passenger’s feet. Upon searching the rest of the vehicle, police found a loaded handgun with its serial number filed off in the glove compartment.
Everyone in the vehicle denied ownership of the gun.
The driver, Keyonta C. Dunn, 22, of Champaign, was arrested for unlawful possession of a firearm and defacing the identifying marks of a firearm. He was brought to the Champaign County Jail.
During the stop, officers discovered that a passenger, Wardell A. Lawrence, 22, of Urbana, had two outstanding Champaign County warrants for failure to appear in court. He also was arrested and brought to the Champaign County Jail.
Those arrested are presumed innocent until proven guilty. For more information on people who have been incarcerated – such as the amount of bail or bond, the date or time of arrest or discharge – please contact the telecommunications desk at the U. of I. Police Department.
