URBANA, Ill. – The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will welcome thousands of new students and their families to campus on Thursday, and many more have been moving back throughout this week.
With move-in traffic on campus and a number of active construction zones throughout Champaign-Urbana, motorists are advised to allow for plenty of time to travel through town. Those who do not have a need to be on campus during the remainder of the week are asked to avoid the campus area to the best of their ability.
Most major campus thoroughfares will see heavy traffic or lane closures including Lincoln Avenue, First Street, Fourth Street, Pennsylvania Avenue, Gregory Drive, Peabody Drive, Illinois Street and Goodwin Avenue.
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign employees and contractors working in the affected areas should also consult the move-in map to see where limited traffic patterns are.
University of Illinois Police officers will be assigned to affected areas on Thursday to help alleviate some traffic congestion, but travelers should expect delays due to the high number of vehicles in the area.
The University of Illinois Police Department thanks everyone for their cooperation and patience as we welcome our students back for the 2019-2020 school year, and we wish everyone a safe and wonderful fall semester.
