On Friday, October 13th, LER hosted a Memorial Service at the Illini Union to honor the late Walt Franke. Professor Franke was the Dean of the now-School of Labor and Employment Relations from 1981 until 1994 and worked for the school for nearly 40 years all together.
We were extremely honored to have Mrs. Franke and her youngest son, Paul, joined us to celebrate the life of Mr. Franke and his contributions to the University of Illinois. Remarks, stories and inspirational messages were shared from Dean Fritz Drasgow, Joe Martocchio, George Paulin, Alan May, Paul Franke and Pat Franke. We were also pleased to hear the Illinois State Song, performed by first semester LER student Kenny Thompson.
Following the memorial service, we gathered for a luncheon at the Urbana Country Club, in which friends, collegues and alumni shared great stories of Franke, reflecting on how he was able to inspire, educate and engage with everyone he encountered.
