Over the past two months, our faculty, staff and alumni have been gathering at events around the world. From engagements in China to Chicago, St. Louis to Palo Alto and a few places in between.
Jason’s Boys Trip to Global University China Career Union
#ILLINOIS Career Services Council was selected as 'Employers' Choice University Career Service' at the Global University China Career Union in March 2018. Jason Boys (LER Career Services) and Ulyssia Dennis (MHRIR 05, Engineering Career Services) accepted the award which honors universities that work with Chinese enterprises to solve the problem of talent demand. The award recognizes the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as leading the world in professionalism, strong discipline, and good reputation in the recruitment industry in China.
LER also hosted a dinner with some of our Chinese alumni in Guangzhou and Shenzhen! It was great to catch up with our successful alumni in China!

LA Visits and Bay Area Happy Hour – April
Alumni Board Member, Melissa Wiley, organized a Palo Alto Meet Up for our Bay Area Alumni on Wednesday, April 18th at NOLA. On the same trip, Cory Hatfield was able to meet with our alumni at Amgen in Thousand Oaks! Keep your eye out for future upcoming events organized by our alumni in the Bay Area!
Derber Lecture – April
LER was excited to welcome DeMaurice Smith, Executive Director of the NFL Players Association, to campus for the annual Milton Derber Lecture Series. Smith welcomed students from across the campus to discuss his role in the NFLPA and how he engages in contract negotiations, free agency and player safety.
The Annual Milton Derber Lecture was instituted in 1990 to honor Professor Emeritus Milton Derber. Besides honoring Derber, the lecture was established to serve as a focal point for the intellectual enrichment for the school, its faculty and its students, as well as for the university community. The School of Labor and Employment Relations gratefully acknowledges the endowment of Clara Derber Bloomfield, Albert de la Chapelle and Charles Derber in honor of Milton and Zelda Derber for the LER Annual Milton Derber Lecture on Industrial Relations.
Online MHRIR Meetup – Chicago
On April 6, online MHRIR students met with Erik Pickard (Alumni Board Member) at Saint Lou’s Assembly in Chicago, IL. The meetup, organized by online MHRIR student Henny Wong, was an opportunity for students to build on the relationships they’ve established in their virtual course meetings. Erik joined the students to talk about how the MHRIR has impacted his career and the trends that he forsees changing how HR is practiced. Thank you to Henny and Erik for hosting a great event!
