Please see below for details of the Graduate College's Dissertation Completion Fellowship competition. The School of Music is allowed to nominate up to two students for this fellowship. Selection will be made by the School's Graduate Aide Committee. If you wish to be considered, please check first with your Division to see if it has its own internal nominating system and deadline; finalized materials (minus recommendation letters) should be scanned into a single pdf (following the specifications below) and emailed to Jenny Phillips, by Monday, March 26 at 4:30 p.m.

University of Illinois Graduate College - Dissertation Completion Fellowships
The Graduate College's Dissertation Completion Fellowships help outstanding UIUC graduate students complete the doctoral degree by providing a one-year stipend of $20,000 along with waivers of tuition, service fee, health service fee, AFMFA fee, library/IT fee. In addition, the fellow will receive partial payment of the graduate student health insurance fee per semester as well as basic dental and vision coverage. The number of awards offered will depend on the level of funding available.
The intent is to free fellows from assistantships and other work obligations, thereby allowing them to devote themselves full-time to the completion of the dissertation. No concurrent assistantship appointment or employment of any kind is permitted with the Dissertation Completion Fellowship. Additionally, fellows are generally prohibited from holding two major awards concurrently (fellowship, traineeship, grant, tuition payment award or comparable support).
The criteria used in making the awards include the significance of the research, as reflected in the nominee’s proposal and the letters of support, the student's productivity and efficient progress toward the degree as shown in the academic record, and the likelihood that the student will defend and deposit the dissertation by August 2019.
ELIGIBILITY
- Open only to currently enrolled doctoral students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
- Eligible students will be nominated by their department or program.
- Nominees must be enrolled in a program leading to the PhD, DMA, EdD, or JSD and should have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree except the dissertation. Only those students who have passed the preliminary examination by the nomination deadline and who will defend and deposit their dissertations by August 2019 are eligible for nomination. There are no exceptions to these requirements.
- Students who have already received a dissertation completion fellowship from another campus unit or an external funder are ineligible.
- Registration is not required at the time of nomination but is required during the award period.
NOMINATION PROCEDURE
Students must be nominated by their department, and departments may nominate up to two students each. Students, nominating officials, and letter writers should each submit their respective materials to the department's contact person by the department's internal deadline (check with the department's Director of Graduate Studies to identify the appropriate contact person and ascertain the deadline). The department must then scan materials into a single pdf, and the file should be named as follows: LastName, FirstName - DeptAbbreviation - DissComp2018 (for example: Smith, John - Psych - DissComp2018). The pdf should then be uploaded to this online Box folder by the campus deadline.
Note that there are rigid formatting guidelines for each of the required items indicated below. Nomination packages containing items that do not follow the formatting guidelines will be disqualified without review.
The nomination package must contain the following documents, arranged in the following order:
1. Nomination Form, as completed by the nominating official (Dr. Bashford). As part of the form, the nominating official must include a statement supporting the nomination as well as a note explaining how the department ranked its nominees. Refer to the Nomination Form for more specific guidance on writing the statement.
2. CV. The CV is limited to three pages, and it must have one-inch margins and at least 11-point font throughout.
3. Research Proposal. The Research Proposal must be written in an accessible, jargon-free manner appropriate for a multidisciplinary review panel. It should contain the following components:
A. Introduction/Problem Statement. (In this section, the research question, hypothesis, or engineering goal must be stated explicitly.)
B. Background and significance.
C. Preliminary research.
D. Methodology.
E. Timeline.
F. Expected outcomes.
The research proposal is limited to three double-spaced pages, and it must be in Times New Roman, with 12-point font and one-inch margins.
A separate one-page References Cited section is allowed (must be single-spaced, in Times New Roman, with 12-point font and one-inch margins). No appendices or other supplemental sections are allowed.
4. Two letters of reference: one from the student's adviser and one from the student's thesis director. If the student's adviser and thesis director are the same person, the second letter should come from another member of the student's dissertation committee. Each letter is limited to two pages and must be in 12-point font with one-inch margins. (Faculty should submit letters directly to Jenny Phillips.)
5. Current University of Illinois transcript (unofficial will suffice).
Application materials (CV, research proposal, UIUC transcript) must be scanned into a single pdf and emailed to Jenny Phillips no later than 4:30 pm on Monday, March 26. Late materials will not be accepted.
