Internship | Digital Media Intern at Comcast Sports
Duties
From day to day, I was responsible for logging footage of all games aired on the network along with top national games. I also had opportunities to edit video, write scripts, run the teleprompter and camera and attend a baseball game to shadow a reporter. Towards the end of the internship I was able to sit in the studio and anchor a mock Sports Talk Live show.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
The aspect of the internship that I enjoyed most was the fact that interns held vital roles in the newsroom. I was responsible for highlighting key plays that happened during sports games. Comcast Sportsnet also allowed for interns to get hands on experience practicing their work, rather than sitting back and watching others do it.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
The most difficult aspect of the internship was having adequate knowledge of all the sports covered by Comcast Sportsnet. Because interns had to log all of the games on air, it put me in some uncomfortable situations when I didn’t have great knowledge of certain sports. I was able to learn quickly, though, and they helped me when I needed it.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in College of Media prepare you for your internship?
My experience at Illinois and specifically the College of Media helped me in every way possible to get the internship of my dreams. I had my cover letter and resume reviewed and received helped me fine-tune my interests in media. Because the College of Media is a smaller college at Illinois, I was really able to get personal attention from the staff that have worked in the market I want to go into. Any questions I had, the College of Media was there to answer.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
My internship has prepared me for a career in many ways. My internship showed me what a real newsroom is like and how it operates. Everyone has their role to play, and if your job isn’t done, the whole team suffers. My time at Comcast Sportsnet allowed me to see what the media world is all about, and led me to focus on the career I want to have.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
My recommendations for other students doing an internship is to apply for many internships. You can’t be too choosy when thinking of internships. The important part is getting yourself out there and learning about the field. You’re bound to learn something no matter where you intern at, even if you learn that you don’t want to have a career in that particular role – that’s a check off the list. Other recommendations would be to step out of your comfort zone. You can gain some great experience and learn things along the way. Finally, ask questions. The only way to learn is to ask questions. Companies know that interns are there to learn, so they will be more than happy to answer them for you.
