Internship | Account Management Intern at Grey
Duties
Participated in account management meetings with production and creatives at least 3 times a week for launches of new campaigns and television commercials for Crown Royal and Ketel One Vodka
Created a Cannes Lions Recap presentation, and another presentation about alcohol brand partnerships to inform the internal team
Consistently updated a Tumblr blog for Crown Royal about the alcoholic beverage category, relevant cultural happenings and advertising trends
Collaborated with 5 other Grey interns on an intern project and formulated an advertising campaign for Olive Garden
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
I started interning at Grey right when both Crown Royal and Ketel One Vodka were coming up with creative advertising campaigns, so I loved being a part of that creative process. Analyzing and presenting findings about successful advertising campaigns and alcoholic beverage brands was a lot of fun and I learned a lot about branding and strategy. It was also very rewarding seeing the Crown Royal content I saw over the summer up on the billboards in Chicago, or Ketel One Vodka commercials on the air as well!
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
The most difficult part was learning to speak my opinions especially in a room full of high up account management and creatives. However, I eventually learned when to speak up at the appropriate times and that those I worked with wanted to help me, were understanding, and took my opinions and thoughts into account.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Without my time at the University of Illinois, I would not have been as confident at making the presentations that I did or coming up with the multiple advertising campaigns that I had to create. Being familiar with concepts such as target markets, key insights, and creative strategy also helped me feel comfortable working with the campaigns. The positions I held also helped me gain leadership experience and confidence in organizing and being in charge of projects.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
Grey has given me great first hand experience as an account manager and I was able to see how account managers think and conduct themselves in meetings. I also developed relationships with professionals and mentors whom I hope to learn from and get advice from throughout my career.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
If you are a person of minority, I highly recommend applying to the Multicultural Advertising Internship Program. I got my internship at Grey through this program, and I had one of the best summers of my life living and working with other advertising students across the country in New York. If anybody has any questions about the program, please do not hesitate to contact me and I would love to talk about the program!
