Internship | Mavrick Artists Agency | Intern
Duties
I negotiated contract provisions during initial and renewal contract signing, entered and updated auditions, callbacks, and bookings into proprietary database, LAcasting and Breakdown Services. Also, I managed relationships with high profile cliental, casting directors, production studios, and managers via phone, email and in person meetings. Further, I was responsible for administrative duties: scheduling appointments for agents, coordinating day-to-day materials -proofs, submissions, etc.- rolling a high volume of phone calls, and easily handling a high volume of transactions in a professional, positive manner.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
I really enjoyed accumulating so much knowledge on the many fields within the entertainment industry and learning which of those fields I excel in and am most fascinated by. I learned more than expected in the short period of time. Being in this type of competitive and fast paced work environment taught me how to further myself as a skilled, mature, and bold employee.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
It’s an extremely tough industry in which one mistake can break you. I always had to be extremely energetic, sharp, knowledgeable of current entertainment news, and able to multi-task. I am grateful for these challenges though, as I believe I have only become stronger from them.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
It taught me time-management and multi-tasking skills. I also was prepared with a skill set of proper business etiquette, and networking communication skills.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
Through my internship, I was able to learn the fundamental and basic skills necessary to grasp a solid understanding of the entertainment industry. My interaction with clients, agents, casting directors, and other members of the industry prepared me in the best way to know what to expect in the future for a career in entertainment. I also was provided with several networking opportunities and given the responsibility of handling extremely important documentation. This alone was a valuable lesson on how to be a professional in an agency.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
Reach out past your comfort zone and be willing to relocate for your internship. You’ll grow the most when you experience the unknown in an entirely different city. Also, maximize your network as much as possible. You can land the internship of your dreams through a continual line of connections that can put you in communication with that dream company/firm/agency.
