What were your duties?
- Maintained a positive and working relationship with sponsors, staff, and participants.
- Increased communication skills through outreach to businesses regarding upcoming events and promotions.
- Assisted in hosting and promoting events by managing check-in lists for events, arranging and directing participants according to the event particulars, as well as setting up equipment.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
The people involved that I both got to work with and work for. I also got to meet a lot of great people at the events we hosted who would come out to enjoy the event and show support for the station. Plus, it's always fun to experience the behind-the-scene side of an event.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
It was difficult realizing how it would be to go into local businesses and speak with the owners/managers about putting forth money or donated items for event sponsorship, etc. After maybe the second or third business, it just felt natural because they were all so helpful and supportive, but I was not sure how open and giving owners were before this job.
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
It gave me the knowledge and prep to know how to approach our summer events and neatly organize enough public participation to effectively execute one of them, as well as how to get the word out to those living and visiting nearby to come out and have a lot of fun.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
It provided me with an overview of the amount of work that goes into making an event happen as well as the ease of working with those in charge of other businesses to work together and find a way to benefit both our companies.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?I would definitely recommend that students have an Get involved in whatever you are given the opportunity to. The more experience you can get the better because you can learn a lot in a classroom yes, but physically doing it and reading about it are two completely different things..
