Internship: Investigative Reporting Intern - NBC Chicago, WMAQ-TV
What were your duties?
While interning at NBC Chicago, I was a part of the Consumer Investigative Unit. I worked directly with Investigative Reporter Lisa Parker. It was my duty to research and pursue story ideas from viewers through the tip line. Also, I assisted and shadowed general assignment reporters.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
What I enjoyed most about NBC Chicago was being a part of the newsroom. It was my responsibility to propose story ideas, many of which ended up airing. I loved seeing all aspects of the newsroom, developing relationships with the staff, and accompanying reporters on stories.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
Working in a newsroom, especially during times of breaking news, is a stressful environment. It is fast paced with constant pressure to meet deadlines, but an incredibly rewarding experience.
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Working at the Daily Illini and being a part of the College of Media gave me experience that I needed before beginning my internship at NBC Chicago. Much of the work that I did at Illinois I was able to speak about during my interview.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
NBC Chicago opened my eyes to how a professional newsroom functions. I had the opportunity to anchor a show and practice countless stand-ups, all of which I will use as a part of my newsreel when applying to jobs. My internship inspired me to pursue a life-long career in reporting.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?Take advantage of every opportunity that you're presented with. Make connections with as many people as you can, and leave an outstanding impression. Go above and beyond to stand out and show your potential because you never know who is watching/will hire you in the future.
