What were your duties?
There were several different projects I worked on throughout the internship. Some of my responsibilities included:
- Designing and developing promotional emails for various campaigns
- Implementing and designing banner ads for the organization’s merchandise website
- Creating new product images for the organization's merchandise website
- Assembling product webpages for the organization’s e-commerce system
- Utilizing database programs to find new international organizations to advertise online pediatric subscriptions to
- Analyzing and organizing product and customer data
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
I'm a problem solver. I'm always looking for a new challenge. With each new project I worked on, I was able to use my skills and find a solution. When I had trouble working on a project, there was always someone there to help and teach me a new skill to accomplish our goal.
What was the most difficult aspect of your internship?
The most difficult part of the internship was adapting to a routine. Students often have changing schedules in college, whereas in the workplace there is more of a routine like checking and replying to emails, attending meetings, and changing financial codes.
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
There are many classes in the College of Media that involve group work. This didn't change much working at the academy. Every day I was meeting with the same team to complete steps toward our end goal - similar to group work at Illinois.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
I feel more prepared for a career because this internship taught me how to work in the real world. I picked up skills that I can apply to any workplace in the future. Employers will be able to see that I can handle learning curves very well.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
Never stop learning. No matter where it is, an internship can provide students with great opportunities to learn new skills or more about the industry. Additionally, being good with numbers and having great computer skills can go a long way and set you apart from other applicants.
