Video Production Intern - Center for Innovation in Teaching & Learning
What were your duties?
I helped film and edit promo videos for departments on the U of I campus.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
My internship was very easy going, and Susan (who my internship was under) was extremely helpful and always understood if we didn't know how to work something with the cameras or editing software. We got a good understanding of what goes into video production on campus in those few short months.
What was the most difficult aspect of your internship?
Because CITL is so busy with videos that need to be made, sometimes we couldn't get our job done in a timely manner. Sometimes waiting on people was tough in order to get all of our footage done and get the finished products out.
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
I definitely learned a lot prior to my internship about formal elements of film/video so I knew how to frame certain shots and how to edit clips to achieve exactly what we were going for in a video. In some classes I got to work with video editing software so I was already pretty good with it once I started the internship.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
Mixing my internship with the job it inevitably turned into for this Spring 2016 semester, I already feel so much more prepared for my future career. I definitely have learned a lot about shooting in a studio, editing with different software, and working with people to produce the videos they need. I can definitely see myself going into video production similar to this after college.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
I definitely recommend doing one at some point during college. I was unable to find one in Chicago during the summer, so I looked on the College of Media job/internship board at the start of the semester and got this one with CITL and I am so happy I did. Without this internship I don't think I would be at all ready to go into the production field after I graduate. It's all about experience, and this internship really got me on the right track!
