What did you most enjoy about your internship?
The culture is very Wolf of Wallstreet in a more modern way! Besides the free food, baristas, and yes, kegs after work, the people at the company you work with are personalities. The ping pong tables and video games are only a platform for friendships to begin.
What was the most difficult aspect of your internship?
How do you tell a business owner they are going about their marketing plan in the wrong way? How do you convince a business owner to spend money on something like social or digital media when they grew up in an age where the phone book was dominant? The answer? You build enough trust and educate them on the new world their business needs to thrive in!
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Every class I've taken, whether it be in my major or one I took out of interest because it gave me greater insight into how humans interact, has shaped me and the skills I hold into what they are today. The extra-curriculars I found like those at Illini Media or through AAF, clubs I found through the college all helped me become someone with a deep strategy and relations background. I have the college, my counselors, my clubs, and friends to thank for all those experiences and opportunities.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
I am knowledgeable about digital analysis platforms that only a handful of college graduates have learned, skills I get to put on my resume. I have met and networked well with those in the industry through my ability to communicate about my past experiences thus far. Foremost, I have learned how to be bold headed in the face of adversity.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
Go for any internship you may want regardless of your age, just go for a lot of them. Don't be afraid to start out somewhere small because in all honesty, that is where you will be given the most responsibility.
