What were your duties?
I worked with the Content Edit team at ESPN, ensuring that all video hitting air on any of ESPN’s networks and programming met the high-quality standard it is known for. I was responsible for editing highlights for shows such as SportsCenter, BBTN, and NBA Tonight. I was also trusted to create montages for producers to use on air in order to preview various sporting events and upcoming games.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
From the first day that I walked on to ESPN's campus, to my last day, everything was very hands on. My mentors wanted to make sure I was getting the most I possibly could out of the internship. Within the first week, I was already sitting in front of a computer editing and slowly started seeing things I worked on appear on TV.
What was the most difficult aspect of your internship?
The most difficult aspect was adapting to the type of shift I had. Since most big sports news or even sports highlights occur in the evening, I worked a later shift than most of the other interns. My workday didn't start until 4:30pm and ended at 1am. Once it became part of my daily routine, I was able to adjust and it became easier.
How did your experience at Illinois and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Working at Fighting Illini Productions played a huge role in me getting the internship. The types of tasks we do there corresponded well with what I was asked to do at ESPN. My journalism classes have also taught me how to work well under pressure and with a time constraint, which helped me stay on task last summer.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
My internship with ESPN gave me a preview of what the real world is like. The skills and takeaways I brought home with me are something I couldn't get anywhere else. It definitely confirmed that I am doing what I love and I can't wait to see what my next step from here is.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
In the media field, internships are a must. The experience you can gain from them is something not even the best schools in the world can provide you with. Not only do they give you the chance to pick up new skills, but it broadens your networking circle. This will help put you ahead when it comes time to apply for jobs.
