Internship Title
Field Marketing Intern
What were your duties?
On an average week, I would visit 40 retail stores to ensure that SanDisk products were properly displayed as well as hold trainings for employees on new technologies and sales techniques. About once every other week, I would travel around the U.S to conferences held in New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Chicago to name a few. At each conference, I would train over 200 employees and retail managers on how to best sell our products.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
What I enjoyed most about my internship was traveling to conferences. There are about 40 companies at each conference and I was always the only intern sent. This enabled me to learn from people with full time jobs in the Marketing field. It also was awesome to know that I was carrying out an actual job, rather than an internship where I would just sort papers or fetch coffee!
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
I found the hardest part of my internship was the independence I was given. Being the only intern stationed in Chicago, I was on my own every day. However, I ended up making competitions with myself to get in more training and demo days than I had the previous week! I am returning this summer to Intern at SanDisk again and plan on scheduling a bi-weekly call among the interns. I hope this will help the new Field Marketing Interns to feel they are a part of a team rather than on their own as I sometimes did.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Being involved in clubs at U of I as well as in the College of Media helped tremendously. Holding leadership rolls in smaller clubs enabled me to quickly take on a leadership role in my internship as well! Take any opportunity to practice public speaking no matter your major, as you need to public speak more than you think!
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
In my internship, I was actually doing a full time job! SanDisk is one of the only companies that hire interns to do trainings and conferences rather than full time employees. I hope that this internship will help me skip a beginner role in my future job search. I also learned the importance of communication and always challenging myself to do more.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
START EARLY!!! I would recommend going to Media Career Services regularly for resume checks, Lunch & Learns, Mock Interviews and just general advice! Any experience is good experience. Do anything possible to get an internship (even unpaid or part time) your freshman or sophomore year so you can stand out when applying for the internships you really want your Junior and Senior year.
