American Society of Magazine Editors internship with Field & Stream magazine
Internship Title
Editorial intern
What were your duties?
-Fact-checked, edited and researched both print and digital content
-Reported front of book articles for the magazine, in addition to
editing and building blog posts daily, occasionally writing my own
-Scheduled social media daily and assisted with the Snapchat account
-Filled in for the managing editor one week, making sure pages were successfully printed and passed around the office
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
The editors at Field & Stream really gave me a lot of responsibilities which I loved. They trusted me and valued my input which coming in as a 21-year old, meant a lot. It was great, because I got so many varied experiences to add to my skill set. Being able to leave that summer with a few magazine bylines was just an amazing feeling.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
For me, the toughest aspect was adjusting to the 9-5 life. As a college student, you have so much freedom in your schedule so it was weird to be in one place for so long. It takes time to get used to and can be very strange. Especially when you’ll be working longer hours starting out.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
I wouldn’t have gotten the internship without the experience I got at Illinois and through the College of Media. My professors and classes, in addition to my time at The Daily Illini, were instrumental in prepping me for working at a real magazine.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
My internship prepared me for my career in a variety of ways, most importantly giving me real life experience outside of working with students. I’ve loved my time at The Daily Illini, but it’s completely different being thrust in the working world with adults. It really affirmed my passion for the job.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
Do everything you can. Don’t say no. Even if you have limited experience doing something, just being open to trying it. Your editors will be impressed that you want to learn and you will actually learn something. Plus be sure to thank everyone at the end of your internship.
