The Black Sheep
Internship Title
Video Production & Editorial Intern
What were your duties?
I produced “Man on the Street” videos throughout Chicago at events, like Cubs games at Wrigley Field, and festivals, like Spring Awakening Music Festival. I also created, wrote, acted and edited several scripted skits that surpassed more than 60,000 views on Facebook. On the editorial side, I trained writers throughout the country on how to become better satire writers.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
What I enjoyed most about my internship was getting to work in the heart of downtown Chicago with a handful of other interns who were my age and from around the country. Waking up every day was exciting because I knew I was going to get to produce funny, innovative content on a daily basis.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
The most difficult aspect of my internship was having creative differences with really funny people. We wanted to take some stories and videos in different routes, and it took some friendly disagreements to be able to come to certain conclusions on what would be the best content.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
My experiences at Illinois and as a journalism major in the College of Media helped prepare me for this internship by forcing me to think outside the box and consider what my audience would like to read and watch. Even though my internship was not traditional journalism, I was able to apply the skills I've learned in all of my classes to help me be successful.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
My internship at The Black Sheep prepared me for my career in broadcast journalism because I learned that I will always have to be flexible in my plans and listen to feedback from those around me to be the best that I can be.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
My advice to other students about doing an internship is to just try to get everything out of it that's possible. The work is likely nothing like you've ever done in the classroom before, but it will be very rewarding when you try something new and do a great job at it!
