Internship Title
Marketing Intern
What were your duties?
As a Marketing Intern at a start-up tech company, I was able to take on a variety of roles at the company that expanded beyond Marketing and into many business disciplines. The two main projects I worked on last Summer were building a Campus Ambassador program and a Powerpoint presentation to be shown to new corporate leads for our Corporate Events. Additionally, I worked with MailChimp for e-mail marketing, Adobe Creative Suite programs like Illustrator, and got my feet wet in projects ranging from social media to insurance.
What did you most enjoy about your internship?
I loved the fast-paced, high impact, culture that a start-up has to offer. Once I finished a project there was always something new to hop in on, which kept me excited for what new challenges each day had to offer. Given the small nature of the company, all the interns were able to get to know everyone really well and our bosses made sure we had a blast all Summer long. Oh, and it was always nice to look up from my computer to skyline views from the Willis Tower.
What was the most difficult aspect of the internship?
The most difficult, yet also the most exciting, aspect of the internship was the fast placed work place. Admittedly, working on multiple projects at once was really stressful at first but thanks to my awesome fellow interns (who I can now call my friends) and flexible bosses, I was able to get the hang of it and learn to love the lifestyle.
How did your experience at ILLINOIS and in the College of Media prepare you for your internship?
Having a year at Illinois under my belt as preparation for this Summer was such an integral part of my positive experience. My coursework as an Advertising student applied to a ton of my projects and definitely helped me generate better output. Additionally, taking advantage of Media Career Services, the Career Center, and the opportunity to join a business fraternity on campus gave me a range of skills that prepared me to be both confident and efficient in real world business.
How has your internship prepared you for a career?
This internship gave me the opportunity to get experience in a variety of different fields that can serve as building blocks for the career path I end up taking in Advertising/Business. Additionally, it gave me the opportunity to narrow down my career interests early on as a Freshman in college which I hope will set me up for a satisfying life after school.
What recommendations do you have for other students about doing an internship?
I recommend taking pride in your unique experiences and the stellar education we are receiving at Illinois. Take those and confidently apply to every and any internship that interests you, shooters shoot.
