We are looking to recruit three undergraduate students as hourly workers to assist with the ForestGeo census of Trelease Woods this summer. Trelease Woods is a 24-ha old-growth forest remnant in Urbana, IL (approximately 3 miles NE of campus) that was acquired by the University of Illinois in 1917. Historically, it was part of the ‘Big Grove’, a ~2,500 ha patch of eastern deciduous forest that existed east and north of Urbana prior to European settlement.
Hours and compensation: $14 per hour over 6 weeks (35 hour week) between June and July.
Dates: To be decided - some flexibility on start and end dates and daily hours is needed to be able to work effectively in a team with two other students.
Responsibilities: Students will relocate and measure existing mapped trees in Trelease Woods using ipads and laser range finders. Data are entered in the field. New trees that have recruited since the first census will be identified, mapped, measured, tagged and painted.
Training and Experience: No previous experience required, but preference will be given to students that have previously worked on the Trelease Woods census. Students will be trained in the census protocol and species identification. Access to a car to drive to Trelease Woods would be helpful (the project will pay transport costs).
