Community Engagement (DEIA) Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for one Community Engagement (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility) intern at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. The position will be a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning May 30th, 2024.
Position Summary:
Wild Rivers Conservancy has a vision of a thriving watershed, forever accessible, scenic, and wild, and we know that this does not happen without a diverse community of riverway stewards. This internship will connect new and diverse audiences to the St. Croix and Namekagon Rivers while gaining experience in community outreach, program facilitation, and relationship building. The intern will work alongside Conservancy staff, NPS Park Rangers, Riverway Volunteers, and Hmong and Community Ambassadors to help promote events and support event logistics. The day-to-day supervisor is the Community Engagement Manager.
Core Functions:
- Facilitate and support activities led by Hmong and other community ambassadors to increase diversity and connect others to the Riverway through outdoor recreation activities such as kayaking, hiking, and birding in our Explore Wild Rivers program area
- Promote the Conservancy and bring awareness of our National Park at community events such as booths at Musky Fest, River Fest, local farmer’s markets, and the Stillwater Lumberjack Days parade
- Support diversity initiatives, such as Latino Conservation Week in July and kayak experiences with youth from Lac Courte Orielles Boys and Girls Club in Hayward
- Work directly with volunteers and other program staff to provide accessible, inclusive and quality experiences for program participants
- Work with diverse partners, including local, state, and federal government agencies, and nonprofit organizations
- Maintain and care for program supplies and equipment
- Contribute positively to the team environment

River Connections Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for one River Connections intern at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. Positions will be a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning May 30th, 2024.
Position Summary:
This internship is responsible for assisting with K-12 environmental education programs and outdoor public programs to connect people to the Riverway and encourage stewardship of it and the watershed for generations to come. The day-to-day supervisor is the Environmental Education Coordinator.
Core Functions:
- Assist with the Rivers Are Alive K-12 environmental education programs at schools, summer camps, and locations throughout the watershed
- Support Explore Wild Rivers public programs, such as kayaking, hiking, and birding

Park Guide Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for four park guide internships at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (Riverway) during the summer of 2024. Positions will be a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning May 30, 2024.
Position Summary:
These positions are within the National Park Service's Division of Resource Stewardship and Education and are supervised by the district interpretive rangers. They provide students with practical work experience in visitor services and interpretation in a national park. Interns will work with park rangers to create opportunities for park visitors to understand the significance of the Riverway and its resources.
Core Functions:
- Research and present pre-developed thematic programs, especially Junior Ranger programs, short pop-up programs, and curriculum-based education programs to educate park visitors and students about the Riverway
- Learn the National Park Service interpretive methodology and develop at least one new program
- Contact visitors and conduct informal programs at park landings, along trails, on the river in kayaks, and at community events such as festivals and parades
- Staff the information desks in park visitor centers, including handling in-person and phone contacts
- Perform operational tasks such as assisting with opening and closing procedures, starting park films, tracking visitor center statistics, selling bookstore items, and answering visitor questions
- Complete behind-the-scenes tasks such as cleaning and organizing
- Issue camping permits and take picnic shelter reservations
- Visit landings and trailheads to stock information and post notices
- Assist other park divisions in maintaining the native gardens at the visitor centers. Shadow work in other divisions to learn the broader operations of the park and Conservancy
- Conduct all on-the-job activities safely and contribute to a safe work environment
- Contribute positively to the team environment

Watercraft Inspector Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for two Watercraft Inspector internships at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. Positions will be a minimum of 10 weeks beginning May 30th, 2024.
Position Summary:
These positions are with Wild Rivers Conservancy and are supervised by the Invasive Species Field Technician in collaboration with the Invasive Species Coordinator. This internship provides applicants with practical work experience in the field of invasive species monitoring and management, as well as public engagement and education. Interns will primarily be in charge of conducting watercraft inspections, decontamination at boat launches on the St. Croix River, and AIS education and outreach while also having the opportunity to assist other agencies and organizations with invasive species and natural resources fieldwork.
Core Functions:
- Serves to inform and educate the public about the threats of ecologically harmful aquatic invasive species to the lakes and rivers in the St. Croix River watershed through watercraft inspections and outreach events
- Operate and transport the mobile decontamination unit to key boat landings along the St. Croix River and perform watercraft decontamination
- Educate boaters at landings along the lower St. Croix River about invasive species identification, threats, and preventive measures
- Visit marinas and bait dealers along the St. Croix River to provide educational invasive species materials
- Assist with zebra mussel sampling efforts throughout the watershed
- Assist NPS staff with field activities related to invasive species research, monitoring, and prevention as needed
- Work with many diverse partners, including local, state, and federal government agencies throughout the watershed

Resource Management Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for up to two Resource Management internships at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. Positions will be temporary, full-time, for a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning May 30, 2024.
Position Summary:
These positions will work within the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway’s Natural Resources Program, which is housed within the Resource Stewardship and Education Division. They will be supervised by the park’s terrestrial biologist and/or aquatic biologist. These internships provide students with practical work experience in resource management in a national park.
Core Functions:
Interns work with resource management and other park staff to gain a deeper understanding of the park’s resources and perform biological work to protect the Riverway. Interns will learn about and be engaged with:
- Invasive and non-native plant control using hand tools, power tools, and herbicides. Sites will be accessed by vehicle, canoe/kayak, and on foot. It is expected that this position will be conducting these duties up to 40% of the time
- Terrestrial restoration activities such as tree planting, inter-seeding local ecotype seed, and installing erosion control materials
- Terrestrial resource monitoring activities including bat acoustic surveys and invasive species monitoring
- Aquatic species research and monitoring activities, including fish and native mussel surveys, water quality monitoring, aquatic macroinvertebrate sampling, and zebra mussel monitoring
- Outreach activities on resource management projects, issues, and resources to inform and engage partners and local citizens

Land Use Management Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for up to two Land Use Management internships at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. Positions will be temporary, full-time, with a minimum of 10 weeks, beginning May 30, 2024.
Position Summary:
These positions are duty stationed at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway headquarters in Saint Croix Falls, WI, and are supervised by the Riverway’s Lands Program Manager. They provide students with practical work experience in the field of land management via on-site scenic easement monitoring and using GIS and other computer tools to develop maps and other products. This internship provides exposure to multiple National Park Service career opportunities with a special emphasis on land-use management.
Core Functions:
Both interns will work with the Lands Program Manager to conduct monitoring of scenic easements at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway.
- 70% of the time will be spent (1) creating field information folders for each easement parcel, (2) then using these field folders in monitoring scenic easements in the field. NPS scenic easement monitors are critical in helping us achieve our goals and protecting the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway for this and future generations. Monitoring requires good communication skills and being able to work with landowners as well as skill with a camera, GPS, and current tablet/app technology such as Survey 123, coupled with visual inspection and observation and (3) GIS analysis and creation of maps that can be taken into the field to identify changes to scenic easement properties.
- 30% of the intern’s time will be spent working directly with lands staff members to evaluate landowner building requests and populate individual tract files with information gathered as a result of easement monitoring.

Invasive Species Intern
Wild Rivers Conservancy is currently recruiting applicants for up to two Invasive Species internships at the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway during the summer of 2024. Positions will be a minimum of 10 weeks beginning May 30th, 2024.
Position Summary:
These positions are with Wild Rivers Conservancy and are supervised by the Invasive Species Coordinator. The internship provides applicants with practical work experience in the field of invasive species monitoring and management and education, as well as public engagement and education. Interns will have the opportunity to learn many new skills from a variety of agencies and organizations, all while being outside working on the St. Croix River and throughout the watershed.
Core Functions:
- Monitor and manage invasive species throughout the Riverway and St. Croix River watershed
- Collaborate with and assist partners with invasive species monitoring and management including working with the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway (NPS) resource management team
- Assist with hosting invasive species volunteer programs such as Project RED, Snapshot Day, Purple loosestrife biocontrol program, and a boat landing education blitz weekend
- Participate in community outreach events and educational outreach activities in coordination with the Rivers Are Alive youth program
- Work with many diverse partners, including local, state, and federal government agencies throughout the watershed
- Educate boaters at landings along the lower St. Croix River about invasive species identification, threats, and preventive measures
- Other duties as assigned
