Job Description
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking 2 field technicians to assist with the 2023 summer field sampling for the Illinois Bat Conservation Program (IBCP), mostly for acoustic surveys, but with opportunities to assist with mist netting as well. Technicians will generally work in teams of 2 to complete tasks including communicating with landowners, deploying stationary bat acoustic recorders, and driving mobile acoustic transects. Technicians will also be responsible for backing up, processing, and data entry of acoustic output. Additional duties may include assisting with mist-netting as time and schedule permits.
Rabies vaccine will be required for bat handling and can be provided by the Survey upon hire. Overnight and long-distance travel with unpredictable hours will be expected.
Qualifications
Must be working towards or have obtained a bachelor’s degree in biology, environmental science, entomology, or natural resources. Must have experience conducting field work in an ecological-related field. Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and be willing to receive a rabies vaccine upon employment to handle bats.
Preference will be given to those with experience deploying bat acoustic monitors, processing acoustic data or mist-netting.
Salary: Starting salary is $15 per hour; up to 40 hours per week for approx. 15 weeks. The estimated start date is May 9, 2023.
