Position Summary:
The recreation program at the BLM Taos Field Office is the largest recreation program out of the BLM Field Offices in New Mexico. The recreation program manages recreational uses within the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, three developed recreation areas, and a robust river program managing sections of the Rio Chama, Rio Grande, and the Red River.
This position will mainly focus on projects at the Wild Rivers Recreation Area but may also provide assistance on other projects within the Taos Field Office Recreation Program. Wild Rivers is located outside of Questa, NM. The town has been working with the BLM and the U.S. Forest Service to boost recreational opportunities that would help drive the economy in Questa and bring tourists in through hunting, fishing, hiking, and mountain biking. Project work will include trail maintenance focusing on trails that provide river access to the Red River and Rio Grande, interpretative sign design, and the mapping of a water line that provides water to Wild Rivers' campgrounds.
This intern would be interacting with local partners and organizations to provide leadership and/or assistance with public events, assist in the development of a new interpretative sign plan that would benefit local schools who often visit Wild Rivers on field trips, and lead a trails maintenance plan for the area.
Major Duties:
- Work with supervisor and park rangers of Wild Rivers to develop a plan for trail maintenance and river access rehab needed in the area.
- Perform general trail maintenance and river access rehab based on the designed plan which may include: brushing, check step removal and replacement, water bar or drainage structure repairs, tread and berm repair.
- Serve as a point of contact for trail crews from youth corps that will be working in the Taos Field Office managed lands.
- Assist the lead Park Ranger with developing a new interpretative sign plan for the outdated interpretative signs in Wild Rivers.
- Gather locations and criteria of current interpretative signs.
- Installation of new interpretative signs.
- Assist the Taos Field Office Wild Rivers staff, Maintenance team and GIS Specialist to map the water line on the ground using GPS mapping devices.
