Job Description
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking technicians to conduct a literature review of natural resource management policies for entities across the midwestern USA, with an emphasis on the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT). This includes procuring and summarizing written policies, discussing preferred and effective methods with external staff, and summarizing findings. Additionally, the position will require mapping sensitive natural areas that occur near IDOT properties and summarizing the types of areas encountered. Occasional field surveys may be included.
Duties include: 1) conducting literature reviews for management policies, 2) helping to interview external staff from departments of transportation and other parties that conduct natural resource management, 3) data entry in an office setting, 4) mapping of existing sensitive natural areas along IDOT properties which may include in-person visits, and 5) assisting with other office and field work as needed.
Qualifications
Candidates must have undergraduate coursework related to biology, geography, transportation, or related fields. Applicants must be willing and able to 1) competently use a computer and other electronic equipment, 2) show good organizational and observational skills with attention to detail, 3) help with data summaries and report preparation, and 4) interact positively with internal and external staff. Bachelor's degree is preferred, but not required.
Salary: $15 - $20 per hour, depending on experience, up to 40 hours per week.
Availability: We are seeking a candidate that is available as soon as possible. The position is headquartered in Champaign, IL, but remote work arrangements are acceptable. The position is scheduled to continue through March 31, 2025. Extension through June 30, 2025, may be available depending on funding and programmatic need.
