Position Overview
This position is the face of Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery and the first contact for the thousands of visitors we get every year. Will be responsible in giving tours to thousands of visitors a year, schedules outreach events, represents the hatchery at statewide outreach events and maintains the largest hatchery museum in the Midwest.
Job Responsibilities
1. Under general supervision of Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery Manager, coordinates the planning and development of interpretive programs for the Division of Fisheries, Hatcheries Section interpretive centers.
- Plans and develops interpretive programs at the Visitor Center.
- Develops informational site tour programs.
- Coordinates tour scheduling.
- Conducts site tours.
- Maintains brochure inventory.
- Develop information packets.
- Develops and implements informational audio/visual presentations.
- Writes semiprofessional articles for dissemination to the public.
- Oversees and assists in the planning and development of other hatchery interpretive programs.
- Organizes and schedules interpretive programming efforts with area educators in order to maximize benefits for visiting school groups.
- Maintains upkeep and cleanliness of Visitor Center including restrooms and cleans after visitor groups in Visitor Center and other viewing areas.
2. Development and maintenance of the hatchery visitor center.
- Plans and constructs exhibits and displays.
- Makes appropriate alterations and improvements to the center.
- Oversees general maintenance of the center.
- Coordinates construction and maintenance with Hatcheries Engineer and the Little Grassy Fish Hatchery Manager.
3. Conducts public appearances.
- Develops audio/visual presentations for off-site usage.
- Prepares and delivers educational and informational programs to community groups and organizations.
- Works with area schools in interpretive programming efforts.
- Works at Conservation World at the State Fair, and other events.
4. Develops an interpretive master plan.
- Develops and maintains visitor log.
- Submits monthly and yearly usage reports.
- Coordinates with Hatchery Manager on anticipated budget needs.
5. Develops and initiates volunteer activities.
- Schedule volunteer help.
- Provide training guidance and direction to volunteers, seasonal employees and college interns.
6. Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Requires a bachelor’s degree in outdoor recreation, fish, wildlife, forestry, natural heritage resource management, or a related biological, life or natural science.
2. Requires one year of directly related professional experience, or completion of an agency sponsored training program.
Preferred Qualifications
1. One (1) year of working knowledge of flora, fauna, ecological and/or geological attraction identification and modern fish, wildlife, forestry or natural heritage management techniques
2. One (1) years of elementary knowledge of division objectives, policies, programs and services and state and federal laws, rules and regulations pertaining to outdoor recreation, fish, wildlife, forestry, or natural heritage resource conservation.
3. One (1) year of elementary knowledge of public relations principles and techniques, audio/visual and other interpretive methods, theories and practices.
4. One (1) year of working experience preparing and maintaining records and written narrative reports
5. One (1) year of working experience collecting information and assist in analyzing and evaluating technical data and reports.
6. One (1) year of work experience providing task-related direction and assistance to seasonal or intermittent employees, volunteers, landowners, sports enthusiasts, or the general public.
7. One (1) year of work experience delivering planned and impromptu informational presentations.
8. One (1) year of work experience developing the core site interpretive program, addressing site interpretive needs and translating those needs into meaningful outlets.

5. Ability to lift loads which may exceed sixty pounds, to traverse rough and broken terrain on foot without mechanical assistance, to use various equipment while standing in a moving boat, and to negotiate a variety of natural obstacles while carrying or otherwise transporting a variety of equipment.
