This is a limited term position ending June 30, 2022.
Working for the Office of Sustainability in collaboration with Facilities Services – Campus Services, the Recycling & Waste Reduction Coordinator oversees the recycling and waste reduction programs across all four campuses at Tufts University, including helping Tufts to meet its goal of reducing waste production by 3% each year and fostering a mindful, just, low-waste culture of sustainability on campus. Although projects vary each year, general responsibilities include the following:
- Recruit, hire, train, and supervise a team of student recycling interns
- Manage recycling, waste, and donations collection during student move-in and move-out
- Plan and implement recycling and waste related education and outreach campaigns, programming, and communications strategies for the University community
- Deliver recycling and composting training seminars to employees and students
- Coordinate specialty recycling streams, such as plastic film, ink and toner, lab recycling, and textiles
- Implement campus zero-waste events, including hiring paid student compost workers
- Manage the University recycling email, answering all recycling inquiries from the Tufts community
- Ensure that spaces across all campuses are in compliance with the campus bin standard, including outfitting buildings and spaces with their waste stations
- Write and propose itemized annual and cyclical budgets for the University’s recycling program
- Expand existing programs such as compost or specialty recycling streams
- Identify and promote opportunities to prevent waste
- Facilitate campus reuse programs, including the Back-to-School Sale, freecycle spots, and surplus store
- Track volumes and weights of all waste streams in coordination with our hauler and vendors
- Execute data analysis and create monthly and annual waste data reports for all campuses
- Coordinate and execute waste audits in academic, residential, office, laboratory, and/or clinical spaces
- Consider, address, and include intersections between recycling and waste and environmental justice across programs and projects
- Set and track programmatic goals, including organizing zero-waste strategic visioning and planning exercises with University stakeholders
- Support the Office of Sustainability’s university-wide sustainability initiatives, which may include staff and student-based behavior change programs
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
- Knowledge and skills typically acquired through the completion of a High School diploma and 5+ years of related experience OR Bachelor’s degree and 0-3 years of related office experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills

- Self-directed and self-motivated
- Excellent time management and planning skills
- Proactive about finding solutions to problems when presented with a time sensitive issue
- Comfortable working in a dynamic and fast-paced environment
- Comfortable creating connections with vendors and groups on/off campus
- Able to send and receive professional emails, phone calls, and maintain good customer service
- Able to navigate stairs and uneven terrain; lift up to 35 pounds; and walk around the 150-acre property
- Familiar with Microsoft Office software, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook, etc.
- Willing to work events that may occur on weekends or weekday evenings
- Knowledge of and/or experience in zero waste and recycling industry
- Evidence of interest in and knowledge of sustainability issues
Preferred Qualifications:
- Has a valid driver’s license and comfortable driving large vehicles
- Comfortable reading site plans and floor plans
- Experience managing other employees
- Experience providing education, outreach, and presentations
Special Work Schedule Requirements:
The role and responsibilities extend to all Massachusetts campuses (Medford/Somerville, downtown Boston, Fenway SMFA campus and Grafton). Intermittent travel to the other campuses is required.
