Job Description |
This position provides technical support to the Terrestrial Wildlife Resources Division. The employee works in Region IV with primary responsibilities for Powhatan, Amelia and Hardware River Wildlife Management Areas (WMA), but may also include other Department lands and facilities as directed, to develop and maintain fish and wildlife habitats and associated populations and to provide the public with wildlife associated recreation. Supports wildlife, fisheries, and boating access objectives throughout the region.

Minimum Qualifications |
A working knowledge of the principles and practices of wildlife and habitat management and the needs of wildlife. Ability to capture and handle wildlife. Ability to safely operate and conduct general maintenance of farm equipment and implements, heavy equipment, motor vehicles, and power equipment. Ability to perform a variety of trade skills (carpentry, electrical, welding, etc.) for general facilities maintenance. Ability to assess structural and mechanical maintenance needs and develop appropriate specifications to take corrective action. Ability to manage hunt programs, utilizing the principles and practices of wildlife management; understand and apply fish and wildlife regulations; implement management and research projects with minimal supervision; supervise others in the completion of projects. Possess interpersonal and written/oral communication skills to work effectively with diverse stakeholders, public and co-workers. Basic skills using personal computers, software to include Microsoft Word, Excel and Access, and the ability to analyze mathematical data. Able to work independently and perform manual labor under varying climatic conditions.
High School Diploma or GED with experience in fisheries and wildlife management and valid driver’s license. Any combination of additional education from an accredited college or university in a related field may substitute for the required experience. A current CDL, Class A or B Driver’s License or must be obtained within six months of hire date.

Preferred Qualifications |
A commercial pesticide applicators license is preferred. Degree in Biological Sciences or a related field, progressively responsible experience in fisheries and wildlife management, and experience in building and construction practices and trades.

Special Requirements |
Must be able to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicators License within 1 year of employment. Possession of a NABLA recognized safe boating certificate, or ability to obtain a safe boating certificate within 6 months or employment. Certified Prescribed Burn Manager, DOF Qualified Wildland Firefighter (Level 2 or 3), USFS Qualified Wildland Firefighter (Level 1), and/or Certified pesticide applicator for right-of-ways and agricultural.
