Description
A summer field technician is needed to assist with applied research quantifying mechanisms influencing the movement and spread of invasive carp in the Illinois River. The technician will assist a graduate student in the collection of samples in the field and will also conduct laboratory analyses of collected samples. This position will be 40 hours per week over the summer and will be based in Champaign, Illinois.
Duties and Responsibilities
Participate in the collection of physiological samples from carp sampled in the field
Conduct laboratory analyses to analyze physiological metrics from samples collected in the field
Examine gill, liver, and olfactory histology samples using a microscope and ImageJ
Assist with data management and organization
Maintain an organized and clean laboratory work environment
Perform other related duties as assigned
Qualifications
Must be in the process of working toward a bachelor’s degree in natural resources, biology, zoology, animal science or a biological-related field
Demonstrated ability to handle responsibility and work independently
Must be able to learn new skills quickly
Must have good organizational skills
Experience with laboratory techniques (i.e., molecular techniques, extraction of DNA from samples, ELISAs) would be an asset
Must have a valid driver’s license
Must be currently enrolled as a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and be eligible to work 40 hours per week
Salary: $13.00 per hour
Available: May - August 2023 with potential extension
