Job Description: We are hiring onetechnician to assist in collectingand analyzing field data at sites within the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indianaas part of a collaborative study between Purdue University and the USDA Forest Service.The technician will work alongside a graduate student who is studying the decline and mortality of chestnut oak (Quercus prinus) in hardwood forests. Basic knowledge of proper field techniques and backcountry safety are required.Applicants mustpossess a valid driver’s license.
Duration: May to August2022Hours:40 hoursper week, typically 10-hour daysMon-Thurs
Compensation: $13.50per hour. Housingduring field portion of summer(May-July 1)is providedinor nearBloomington, IN.Housing will not be provided after the field work is complete and we transition to the data analysis portion of this position. During this time, the technician will have the option to work remotely.
Experience and Skills: Must have coursework in forestry,natural resources, biology, botany, or a similar field, preferably including dendrology and/or forest ecology. The ability to identify woody plants of southern Indiana is stronglydesired. We also desire basic knowledge of forest measurement practices,experience with backcountry navigation using a topographic map andcompass, and familiarity with standard field equipment including GPS.We strongly encourage applicants who wish to gain experience with basic statistical and GIS analysis methods to apply.
