Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is a world-class research institution powered by a highly educated, diverse workforce committed to the values of Integrity, Creativity, Collaboration, Impact, and Courage. Every year, scores of dynamic, driven people come to PNNL to work with renowned researchers on meaningful science, innovations and outcomes for the U.S. Department of Energy and other sponsors; here is your chance to be one of them!
At PNNL, you will find an exciting research environment and excellent benefits including health insurance, flexible work schedules and telework options. PNNL is located in eastern Washington State—the dry side of Washington known for its stellar outdoor recreation and affordable cost of living. The Lab’s campus is only a 45-minute flight (or ~3 hour drive) from Seattle or Portland, and is serviced by the convenient PSC airport, connected to 8 major hubs.
The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.
The candidate’s science focus will be on river corridor biogeochemistry using a crowdsource sampling approach tied to the Worldwide Hydrobiogeochemistry Observation Network for Dynamic River Systems (WHONDRS; https://www.pnnl.gov/projects/WHONDRS). They will have multiple opportunities such as contributing to (1) a large manipulative experiment using crowdsourced sediments, (2) broad engagement with collaborators across the United States, (3) formal data management and open data publishing, (4) biogeochemical measurements using a novel optode-based system, (5) cutting edge multi-omics analyses, and (6) scripting-based data analysis. All work will be done in a team-based environment, and the candidate is expected to contribute to team goals and a productive and inclusive team environment.
To be successful the candidate must have skills and experiences as follows (1) biogeochemical measurements of river corridor sediments and/or soils, (2) experience working in a team environment and dedication to an inclusive/supportive team culture, (3) strong attention to detail, and (4) highly organized. In addition, there is a strong preference for candidates with experience scripting in R and/or Python.
Candidates must have received a Bachelor’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university. Minimum overall GPA of 2.5 required.
Degree in biogeochemistry, environmental microbiology, environmental chemistry, or related field.
