The Construction Engineering Research Laboratory (CERL) is seeking candidates for Research Assistants (RA) to work on delineating wildland fires on military installations using satellite imagery. RAβs are part-time during Fall/Spring semester and full-time during Summer semester. CERL is in Champaign, Illinois and is a research laboratory under the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers β Engineering Research Development Center (USACE β ERDC). CERL is seeking individuals who are self-directed, capable of multi-tasking, and creative at problem solving. The individual will need strong GIS skills and be willing to learn basic level programing skills (R and Python). The position may require remote field work for data collection.
Job Description:
Conduct fundamental and applied research in the use of geospatial information, remote sensing technologies and machine learning to better understand wildland fire processes on military lands both in the United States and globally. Major research areas include burned area delineation, burn severity, aboveground biomass fuel estimation, and wildland fire risk/ hazard. Applies professional knowledge and experience in GIS, remote sensing, and machine learning to develop guidance and procedures for land management of military installations. Develop peer-reviewed and technical reports, present findings at Professional meetings, and to stakeholders both within and external to the Department of Defense.
