JOB DESCRIPTION
The Illinois Natural History Survey is seeking up to 8 technicians to conduct applied research in aquatic ecology and large river systems throughout the state of Illinois. Technicians will assist large river ecologists in the collection of standardized long-term river monitoring data with additional targeted data collection. This position will be 40 hours per week and will be located in Havana, Illinois.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must have or be in the process of working toward a bachelor degree in aquatic ecology, biology, zoology or a biological related field. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and strong ability to swim. Preference will be given to those with experience in field collection protocols, safety protocols in relation to field work and data collection, laboratory work and large river sampling. Experience with large boats, outboard motors, trailers, four-wheel drive vehicles, along with other fisheries, water quality, and related field equipment is preferred. Experience with standardized long-term river monitoring (LTRM) sampling protocols and training in boater safety and laboratory safety is also preferred. Candidate will participate in boat electrofishing, netting and other appropriate gear types as well as be expected to perform field station maintenance duties when needed. This position requires significant physical exertion (including carrying 50 or more pounds of gear), commitment to safety, and meticulous data recording. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions, long days with possible nights and weekends.
Salary: $15.00 - $16.00 per hour, depending on experience
Available: June 1– October 31, 2023, with potential extension to December 2023 and beyond. Starting date can be adjusted slightly depending on candidate’s availability, including potential starting date prior to June 1.
